Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.

Every time I see a post implying that Su Xiyan been a bad parent it makes me so mad. As far as I can tell, the arguments are always based on the fact that she doesn't seem "maternal" enough. She appears cold, serious, and primarily focused on cultivation, thus she does not fit the typical role of mother, and therefore... would neglect the child she was willing to die for???

Sadly, we only ever get outside perspectives on Su Xiyan in the novel, and from those glimpses, it's easy to read her as cold, but that's not supported by her actions! She was indulgent with Tianlang-jun from their first meeting, she cared about him enough to risk her standing in the cultivation world for the demon she fell in love with, she was unfailingly loyal to him, refusing to participate in the plot against him, and she wanted LBH. She loved TLJ and Binghe enough to sacrifice her life. She's clearly not cold at heart, and if she was willing to side against the cultivation world for her lover then I can't see her valuing her own power and pursuits over her loved ones.

Loving your child deeply isn't always enough to be a good parent, but assumption that a woman like Su Xiyan not only lacks the capability to be a good mother but would necessarily be neglect just feels misogynistic.

Binghe has two moms who sacrificed their own well-being for his and I see no reason to believe that SXY wouldn't have raised him with just as much love and care as the washer woman

The thing that stresses me out so much about AUs set earlier in the series is worrying about how much the things that happen would affect Shane's cup chances and therefore his character as Shane Mother fucking Hollander, so thank you thank you thank you

anon you sent me on a deep dive on nhl draft combine reporting! sorry ik this was about webweaving but i got way too into the sports physio of it all.

so to start. will has a deviated septum* which makes it hard for him to get enough oxygen through his nose. this is not ideal bc optimal inhalation during exercise is through the nose. otherwise, on the ice you can tell he's not quite up to mack's anaerobic fitness level. however that's a very relative bar bc a ton of nhl players are not. mack's 200 ft style of play requires an insane level of conditioning, esp for a teenager.

the only quantitative data we have is from the 2023 nhl draft combine, which only posts the top 25 results per fitness test. out of 103 prospects, will was 24th in leftwards agility, 17th and 18th respectively in peak and mean power output (anaerobic), and 24th in pull-ups (he completed 11. which is not super impressive for athletes generally but decent for a hockey player given lower body focus). keep in mind that the combine is usually dominated by lower draft picks -- mack also only hit top 25 for 4 tests in 2024. (anton frondell is kind of a freak for going so high and finishing 1st in vo2 max.)

tl;dr, will is like. okay. fitness-wise. as many are saying he really needs to focus on bulking up and possibly conditioning over the summer, but he's not exactly out of shape. he looks like he's dying after a shift bc hockey shifts are a LOT more draining than they look, and on top of that he is dealing with a fucked up nose and crippling anxiety. has anybody ever suffered like will smith hockey?

mack's thoughts on all of this: he thinks smitty is the greatest hockey player to ever play hockey on his line, and if he has to drag smitty up the grouse and to sidcros super special team canada camp to cement that this summer, he will. he also kind of wants to stick his fingers in will's dumb dorky open mouth and like. map out the shape of his weirdly large canines. mack thinks they kind of look like fangs. he wonders if he asked if will would bite him with those fangs? mack's not super picky on location but he has a couple ideas
