I’ve had nearly a week to digest that threesome scene in last Monday’s episode and I just.... I still can’t get over it. And it’s not because I hate Maria or even Miluca or what have you.

It’s just...narrative-speaking, why was that scene there? It did not further the plot at all. If anything, it served to conclude Michael and Alex’s “relationship”. Even if we’re still not past that yet, that final conversation between them felt like a closure talk to me.

No, that’s not it either. It’s Carina’s blatant disregard for sincerity when it comes to portraying viable representation. And I know some people were overjoyed to see it on-screen. I am with you. Having characters and situations that relate to your circumstances are thrilling. Especially when it comes to marginalized communities and their stories. It’s a joyful thing to see representation and feel known. I’m not trying to invalidate your joy. In fact, the reason I love those show so much is because it’s inclusion of bisexuality.

I’ve also seen a lot of people talk about how that scene triggered their PTSD. Again, valid. There was a slight miscommunication with Tyler’s delivery of that line,where he actually says, “I don’t want to go” instead of what many people heard, “I want to go.” Tyler said it so softly that it got lost under the music in that scene. Still tho. Body language tells us all something. There was too much confusion in that scene. From Michael’s look of of “Wtf is going on” and his subsequent acquiescence and Alex’s reticence and his eventual departure from the Airstream. Even Maria had a moment of hesitation the morning after, if that panicked look was anything to go by. There was too much blurring of lines in that scene and nothing was clear cut. And the patchwork writing in which they tried to sew together an explanation for their feelings in that morning-after conversation...it all felt flat to me, a non-explanation.

I think, everyone has a right to feel good or bad about that scene.

Sadly, it was not executed well at all. And Carina is constantly a thorn in my side because she always pats herself on the back for a job “well done” when she tries (sometimes fails at) to represent different issues and groups. You can’t just focus on the good reactions and fight with everyone who doesn’t like how you portrayed something. I get wanting to avoid the name-calling and the negativity, but you can’t avoid the fair criticism. Without it, you can’t call yourself a writer.

I’m going to continue watching the show because I love the characters. My only hope is that the characters end up happy, one way or another.
