tonight im thinking about shauna and travis parallels.
travis provided a physical connection to jackie shauna could never give to her, but wished she could.
shauna provided a sibling-like protection travis could never provide javi, but wished he could.
both of those people were taken from them, and they both had something to do with it, whether it was travis sneaking off to sleep with jackie or shauna butchering javi. in their mind, they likely connect their grief to each other, which breeds hatred and anger, maybe even blame. (travis' dad also died putting an oxygen mask on shauna, so there's that)
if you also think about it in a broad aspect, pre-shauna and pre-travis shared many similarities, given their insecurities and the unhealthy ways they were taking it out on people. with shauna, it was more malicious, being portrayed with infidelity and lies, but with travis, it was portrayed with misogyny. one imploded and the other exploded.
jackie and travis' father were their first losses; their pillars of stability were gone. put in the protective/paternal/maternal role of another, which was mutually javi, he was ripped from their hands and killed, which meant they failed at their roles.
grief made travis withdrawn in season three, whereas shauna became an angry and almost evil mess in the eyes of everyone else. their experiences are extremely similar but they took two completely separate paths to coping with it.
"you wanna make it 2 for 2 with your brother?"
Jackie losing her virginity to Travis instead of Shauna vs Javi seeing Shauna as an older sibling instead of Travis.
Shauna lashing out because of her grief vs Travis sinking into himself
Shauna sharpening the pit spikes and Travis setting them up
Travis going to Lottie towards the end of his life vs Lottie going to Shauna's daughter toward the end of her life
Shauna ending up with Jeff because of grief for Jackie and Travis keeping on going back to Natalie bc Javi died in her place
Travis hallucinating Lottie while having sex with Nat and Shauna hallucinating Lottie caring for her baby
Always one degree of separation from each other through another person. Jackie, Javi, Lottie.
travis’s dad putting shauna’s oxygen mask on and being thrown from the plane because of it… travis and shauna both telling nat not to “act like such a fucking saint” at different times… travis and shauna both losing two people important to them out in the wilderness, the first person being someone they loved but had a complex relationship with, the second being someone innocent that they’d wanted to protect and care for… travis bringing up shauna when lottie talks to him about grief… adult shauna showing genuine distress when she hears that travis is dead… travshauna you are so interesting to me i love your parallels
thinking about… travshauna tether…
- travis’ dad dies helping shauna put on an oxygen mask when the plane crashes
- shauna lowkey adopts javi during their first few months in the wilderness
- travis is the first one to give an offering to the wilderness to spare shauna during childbirth
- travis started his time in the wilderness violent and angry but that all died with javi and he turned inward becoming quiet and withdrawn, where shauna started quiet and somewhat withdrawn and full of love but became violent and angry with javi’s death (and her having to butcher him)
- shauna eating jackie’s ear and travis eating javi’s heart…
- travis got the intimacy with jackie that shauna wished she could have, and shauna was the sibling to javi that travis wished he was.
- “what about shauna” when lottie tells travis it’s okay to be mad about what happened to javi and his dad (being maybe the only one to recognize what she had gone through out there)
i may be missing things too but this is just off the top of my head. i love them
my favorite brothers ❤️
butcherstag/travshauna?
big big big BIG fan!!!!!!!!!
they're kind of what shaunat and travnat are to me except they hate themselves so it's. much worse.
i honestly usually lean into a sibling dynamic for them BECAUSE of those parallels and shauna would ACTUALLY kill him if they had to kiss... but i think theyd get along as step siblings. like trading boxers and cds. asking for mutual girl advice and getting BAD results.
also... travshaunajackie (NOT sibling) love triangle.... BIG fan
You know what’s absolutely nuts to me? Travis CARES for Shauna, or at least has a soft spot for her. This is a girl who violated him, nearly killing him by making him bleed, and you know what he does? He willingly makes himself bleed later on for her and her baby. Shauna then just stands there and watches his little brother drown, letting him die, and gives Travis the raw heart to eat. Then when we get to season 3 we find out Travis isn’t even letting himself be upset about it because of SHAUNA’S grief. When he’s drunk in the finale and supposedly hearing Javi and Jackie’s thoughts, he seeks Shauna out, wanting to tell her about it. Maybe trying in a way to reassure her that their loved ones aren’t really gone in his inebriated state. Travis haters are so fake, he should be so much worse and he just isn’t.
