Ah, the McDonald's service station outside Durham just off the A1(M). A classic and unique work of no small architectural and social importance, I'm sure you're already well aware of its legendary status among places you go to simply because there is nowhere else. My butt hurts. #servicestation #durham #killerminimal #butts #buttpain #sorrytherearenoactualbutts
My uterus is killing my butthole.
http://static.best-ever.org/wads/buttpain.pk3 - Load in Zandronum openGL with a megawad of your choice. The trailer may have been a joke, but the .pk3 is real.
All right, time for a little background.
I love horror. I love horror critters, I love horror stories, I love the themes and motifs behind horror. I'm a nerd when it comes to horror (as opposed to being a nerd about hundreds of other things).
About ten days ago, a project called "Creepypasta Doom" was posted on the Zandronum forums. For those who don't want to/can't visit the link, the short of the matter is that someone wanted to take the typical "iconic" characters (who are really just memes with an omg2spooky bent at this point) and go typical team Ghouls VS Humans deathmatch with them. And, really, this caused me to think a bit. This isn't a scary idea. It's not even creepy. ...and, really, there hasn't really been a single decent horror wad for the engine yet.
Lord knows there's certainly been attempts. People have tried porting stories and other games, but usually fall flat by either relying on jump scares, gimping the player to the point of uselessness, or trying to mix vanilla combat in.
And then there's the genuinely good attempts, like Spacedie (which actually builds an atmosphere and paces you around a bit) and Unhinged (which has genuinely disturbing enemies and atmosphere), but they suffer from the same problem a lot of other horror games have--you play through them once, and...well, you're done. You've experienced it. It's good, and you'd like to go through them again another time, but it won't be the same. You already know what's coming.
So with this, I decided to try an experiment. The core idea of horror is that of "not being sure"--put a defenseless player in imminent danger and make their fate uncertain, and you might hit something.
The big idea of this is that of deception and randomization. It's compatible with thousands of vanilla megawads and hundreds of non-vanilla megawads, but they're no longer the locales of jumping and gunning and running through. Now, every corner might hold a dark beast willing to tear your ass apart. Or sometimes they might just make noises at you and watch your reaction. Or sometimes they won't do anything at all and will just...watch, quietly. And you are utterly, completely helpless to stop them. So, of course, to accentuate the deception, I put up a trailer about you being a big giant badass killing the unkillable--so you would go in expecting killer weapons and...instead, be utterly helpless.
And for some people, it worked--I watched a friend play on Skype and saw him turn into a crying, sobbing fit who quit the game a few levels in and nearly shut the call down. I saw several people on /vr/ display varying levels of NOPE, with my personal favorite being one friend's playthrough. And for other people, it didn't. I saw some people roll their eyes at me, and heard complaints like "What's the point?", "This mod is only useful for speedrunning", and "LITERALLY NOTHING IS HAPPENING".
I'm curious as to what you think, though. What were your reactions? What do you think worked? What do you think didn't work? Did you like it, or think it was lame?
