Tips For if You Have no Other Choice Than to Order From Amazon
A lot of people get groceries from Amazon, and little can be done about that. But I think most of us, despite disliking this giant monopoly and the crap they put their workers through, have little other choice than to buy certain items from their website.
So what can you do when shopping from this exploitative business, to reuce the overall impact of your sale?
Sometimes, an item that e would otherwise want to buy is just not on another site, especially if it is a spceific item that oneone has asked for. Or maybe you cannot find the item on other websites. (do know that sites like Poshmark, Etsy, Depop, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and local thrift shops or pawn shops should be places to look into first, before Amazon, if you are able.) So what to do?
Do NOT buy from Amazon Warehouse!!!
When you choose the option to buy “New and Used from X dollars“ the first couple of options you see are going to be from the Amazon Warehouse, or else “fulfilled by Amazon.“ Do not pick these offers, which are often much lower priced.
Amazon warehouse workers are so overworked and in such poor conditions that many of them have died due to heart attacks, heat stroke, and COVID-19. They are provided basically no protective gear on the job, and often have to work with hundreds or thousands of other people. Especially during the holidays, it is vital that you do not shop from the warehouse.
I used to sell used books on Amazon, and when I did, I packaged and shipped all of the books myself. Look for the sellers that do that. These smaller sellers give less of their overall profit to Amazon, and they take a lot of the pressure off of Amazon workers.
Buy Used
On most items, Amazon allows you to buy items used. This is a great way to potentially help smaller sellers, yet also preventing the creation of new items. I often do this if I want a book or a game, etc, I buy it used. Almost everything I own is used, secondhand, salvaged, or refurbished.
Buy Local
Shipping an item from China or India to the US uses up a LOT of fuel, making greenhouse gasses far more concentrated! With most items, if you buy it third party, you can see where it ships from. Making sure it is shipped from the US (although a bit finnicky on Amazon’s platform) can help a ton when it comes to supporting small businesses and lowering your environmental footprint.
Not all of us have the privilege to 100% boycott a company, but with what little we do have to buy from them, it is best to be mindful about it.
