The rear of the Smith General Store along the now-defunct @MorrisCanal at @waterloovillage in Byram Township, #NewJersey, part of Allamuchy Mountain State Park. This building was built in 1830 and in December 1847 it also became a post office, with Peter Smith serving as the first postmaster. It was a successful store because it was right along the canal, allowing boats to tie up at the rear and goods to be unloaded from boats right into the building using a wheel and pulley system. Waterloo Village was added to the @NationalRegisterNPS on September 13, 1977. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #byram #byramnj #njparks #nrhp #waterloovillage #smithsstore #generalstore #allamuchymountainstatepark #morriscanal #canal (at Waterloo Village Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4qm59igopi/?igshid=1x36n2bxs633y
Waterloo Village in Byram, #NewJersey. The village was about the half-way point in the 102-mile trip along the Morris Canal. Most of the remaining buildings from this canal town date to the mid-19th century. After a decline in canal traffic, the village was abandoned by the 1930s. In the 1960s, volunteers began to restore the buildings and after a rebirth in the 1980s, the site once again declined due to problems with the non-profit running it. Select buildings are now open during the summer and fall each year and the State of New Jersey in conjunction with the Canal Society of NJ operate the site. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #winter #snow #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #architecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #byramnj #byram #canal #morriscanal #waterloovillage #thisisnj #jerseycollective #njspots #explorenj #igersnj #ushistory #americanhistory #ipulledoverforthis #snowday #barn (at Waterloo Village, New Jersey)
