“Oh good, you’re here,” Cade said when he saw Leif among the throng of people. He reached out to take his wrist, tugging him out from the crowd toward the back garden. When Cade had arrived, he’d gone straight toward the shed out back, gathering all the gardening tools he could find and got to work. He had fresh dirt on him, smeared across his cheek and forehead and staining the knees and hems of his pants, but he didn’t seem to care, as he led him, barefoot in the cold and trailing soil, outside.
“I’ve been weeding out back. It’s been a while since it snowed, so it’s the perfect time before it starts again. They have a lot of space, but I think I’m about halfway done. There’s also the front courtyard to go over. Do you want to help me?” He paused, considering Leif’s nice white and black sweater. “You’ll have to change.”
