It had only been a week since the disappearance of one Laura Fiore and her old work had already put up a ‘FOR HIRE’ sign. It wasn’t unexpected: Café Rouge was a business after all and while Laura’s disappearance was well-known throughout the town of Ravenswood, the business was still booming. It was a small coffee shop with only ten tables and shelves upon shelves of books for the students coming to study and the eclectic reader.
You just needed a job while you were finishing up college, some income to pay for the pizza deliveries, and the textbooks needed for graduation. It was the stereotypical college job, tending bar at a coffee shop. Maybe you would be lucky and have a cute barista coworker who would write his number on your coffee and you would have a nice relationship that would eventually fall apart over some small argument. So, you sat patiently and answered the owner’s question after close one night, work papers in front of you, and him reviewing your resume.
The first bad sign was having to sign a non-disclosure agreement before your interview; leaving you unable to speak about anything you would hear at the job. Maybe there is a nice recipe that you can’t tell the competition? A secret selection of books that you would have to protect? Maybe even a secret speakeasy in the back of the bar?
“We want you to work here, but we need to let you know something before you start.” the manager, an older man with grey roots, and wearing a denim apron. He was known only as Mr. Bishop around the bar, addressed professionally by his employees but obviously respected. He has an old face and eyes shielded by thick black glasses. His eyes are steely like they have seen many a weak college student enter and leave the bar, but had a troubled weight behind the eyes like a man returning from a funeral: unable to speak. “Yes, sir?” you asked, wringing your hands in the edges of your shirt underneath the table.
“My shop has, let’s call them, an ‘eclectic’ clientele,” he started, taking off his glasses and cleaning them with a cloth from his apron pocket. “They often get possessive of their favorite baristas, like children with a favorite teacher. We have increased security after what happened to the last barista, no one opens or closes alone and every employee has keys to the shop. If any of our customers get too ‘adamant’, I will happily deal with any customers. However, what happens in the shop stays in the shop. Do you understand me, (Y/N)?” he put his glasses back on, staring you in the eyes as he finished. You quickly nodded, keeping your eyes on your hands.
“You start training tomorrow. The shift starts at 6:30 AM and goes until 1PM. Wear pants and at least short sleeves so you don’t get burns on your legs or upper arms. Bring something to write notes in, a lot of our recipes are in grams and can be difficult until memorized. I’ll have you in the schedule for next week and will give you the rest of the weeks’ schedule tomorrow.” Mr. Bishop stood up while gathering the papers on the table. “Get some rest, tomorrow will be busy,” he said comfortably.
You stood up, removing your hands from your shirt to shake his. You grabbed your bag before stepping out of the shop and into the rain. You hold your hand out, pulling it back when it was soaked. You sighed, turning behind you to see Mr. Bishop removing the ‘FOR HIRE’ sign and turning off the neon red ‘OPEN’ sign.
You turned back to the rain, quickly running into the rain and hurrying back to the college housing you had made your home for the semester. You hurried past the dark alleyways of Ravenswood, missing the shadows looming from the corners of the darkness. Eyes watched as you hurried home and you, like a butterfly had begun to move closer and closer to the spider’s web.

It was an early morning when your 5:45 AM alarm went off, calling you to get ready for the first day of a new job. It was a slow morning, the sun hadn’t even appeared over the horizon as you had gotten dressed with the owner’s advice in mind for safety. You tied your shoes before grabbing your keys and notebook before heading out of the apartment you lived in to go to work.
The town of Ravenswood was still asleep, the only light coming from streetlights lining the town’s streets. There were a few people out, mainly walking their dogs or going on jogs. You could hardly believe a town as sleepy as this had someone as young as Laura go missing. The town was full of confusion and fear, regarding one of their young people and how they suddenly disappeared.
When you arrived at the coffee shop, the lights were off but it was obvious people were moving around inside. You pulled open the door, stepping into the dark stacks of the book section and looking up to see someone working behind the bar.
He was a lithe, young man with auburn hair swept off his face. He was young, but with a strong jaw seemingly made of granite. A button up shirt was left slightly undone at the top, revealing a black tattoo that coiled around his collarbone. He glanced up and waved with a large metal contraption in his hand. “You must be the new person, right? Or I’m going to have to break it to you that we don’t open for another thirty minutes,” the man’s voice was calm, but jovial with a tone of joking in the deep tenor.
“No, I’m the new person,” you confirmed, standing in the door way as he pulled out a cloth to begin wiping down the bar. “(Y/N), right?” his eyes met yours, earning a nod in return. “I’m Shane, Bishop wanted me to help show you the ropes in opening up and I’m going to training you. Go through that door back there and set your stuff in the back. I’ll show you how to get everything set up for open,” he said, giving a light smile to you and pointing to a brightly lit door in the back.
You nodded, stepping out of the door way and going to the back. The bright room had tile floors covered in rubber mats, a large dishwashing station full of mugs, glasses, and plates, and a desk tucked in the back where Mr. Bishop sat. “Good morning, (Y/N),” Mr. Bishop called out, not looking up from his work. He pointed to a rack to hang up your stuff, which you quickly moved to do. “As a precaution here, we use fake names on the name tags to allow the baristas not to be followed around outside of work. Shane out there goes as Knight and I go by King out there.” he mentioned as he fiddled with an empty name tag.
“Chess pieces?” you asked, glancing as you shrugged off your jacket. “It’s a simple fake name that everyone knows is fake, but memorable enough. You don’t have to stick with the chess theme, but if you want, we can get your set up with Rook or something,” he explained while pulling out a chalk marker. “Rook works well for me, Mr. Bishop,” you confirmed. He nodded before writing the name in large letters on the black chalk name tag. He handed it to you, allowing you to put it on your shirt. “Shane, or Knight, will get you set up out there and will show you the ropes. Remember to call him Knight in front of customers,” Mr. Bishop reminded. You nodded as you returned to the front of the shop.
Running a coffee shop seemed daunting at the beginning, but as Shane showed you how to brew the espresso and explained the different coffee items, it seemed less and less scary. You were wiping off the counter when Shane turned on the lights, unlocked the door and smiled at you. “Don’t worry Rook, it’s not as scary as you think,” he reassured as he returned behind the counter.
The first customers only seemed to order black coffee, but it was an hour after closing that the first regular came in. “Good Morning Mr. Arnold.” you heard Shane, no Knight, call out. You turned over, expecting an older gentleman but were shocked to find someone slightly older than your coworker. He was in a blazer and slacks, hair dark and side parted. His face was steely and his eyes were cold, his pale skin looking ghostly and close to hollow. “It didn’t take King long to replace the last barista,” Mr. Arnold stated while keeping his eyes on you. He was examining you like a fox staring at a rabbit, harsh but his eyes turned lighter once Knight started talking. “Yeah, well you know how he gets. King needs someone to run the front after all. You want your usual today?” he asked, pulling out a small glass.
The man nodded, pulling out a few dollars in change. Knight placed the order in the register and Mr. Arnold followed by putting a ten dollar bill in the tip jar. Knight immediately got to work brewing the espresso for Mr. Arnold. He turned back to you, his eyes turning steely. “You best be careful here, young Rook. Pawn got in a lot of trouble with some of the people who came in here, it doesn’t turn out well,” Mr. Arnold informed with his dark eyes staring at you. “Pawn, sir?” you asked, confused. He chucked, “My apologies, the last barista, that missing girl went by Pawn here,” he mentioned before grabbing his small cup of espresso and turning it with a small spoon. “Don’t scare them, Arnold. It’s their first day,” Knight mentioned with a frown on his face.
Mr. Arnold chucked softly before sipping his espresso. “Just being honest, Knight,” he mentioned with a smile. The bell of the door rang again, this time a college student entered. “O-Oh, I didn’t know Mr. King could find a new barista that fast,” the student was skittish, thin and lithe with their hair tied above their head. An undercut was underneath the small bun and they were drowning in a large cardigan over a tee shirt and jeans.
“Good morning Willow, and yeah, King needed someone else to run the front. It’s their first day, so be nice,” Knight called out from the espresso bar. “Nice to meet you, Willow,” you called out with a small smile on your face. Willow’s cheeks flushed and they offered a small smile in return. “I-I usually get a l-latte with the s-seasonal syrup, w-which one is it?” they asked as you began ringing it up. “It’s lavender today,” you answered, checking the notebook full of notes. They nodded and smiled as you rang them up, pulling out a card to pay. You looked back at the tablet when they were done, your eyes almost going wide. The tip was nearly double their order. “I t-tip w-well, you d-deserve it,” they smiled and you gave one back as they went to go sit at a table in the stacks of books.
“Willow’s a medical student over at the college, but they live off campus.” Knight mentioned as he showed you how to steam milk, before pouring the latte. “They always tip well, but only to their favorites. I only seem to get one or two dollar bills off them. It’s good to have favorites, I guess but make sure you don’t mention names.” Knight reminded and he handed you the large latte. “Be careful, it’s hot,” you nodded as you carried the drink over to Willow’s table. “Studying to do?” you asked as you gently set the latte down. Willow nodded, “I h-have an anat-anatomy test today, the c-coffee helps me focus,” they mentioned and took a sip of the latte. You nodded, “Don’t let me distract you then,” you smiled before returning to the bar.
Mr. Arnold had left at this point, leaving another dollar on the counter underneath his espresso cup and Knight slid it over to the tip jar. “We split tips at the end of the shift, but you get your digital tips on your paycheck,” he mentioned. You nodded as you wiped down the counter. “What was Mr. Arnold talking about with the last barista?” you asked Knight as you took the dishes to the dish bin. “Laura got involved with some of the weirder customers and sometimes didn’t use the alias. Mr. Arnold is a cautious fellow, but he plays his favorites as well,” Knight mentioned. “It seems you’re one of his,” you responded as you pulled out more mugs. “Well, yeah. Everyone likes their stuff done a specific way and Mr. Arnold is no different,” Knight answered.
The next person who came in was definitely more frazzled. She was a young woman, with long white hair tied into a side braid that had a couple pieces of hair sticking out. She was dressed professionally, holding her bag and a piece of paper in her hands. “Hey Knight, I got another list of drinks again,” she mentioned sadly as she set it down. She looked at Knight for a second, before her eyes flickered to the side, only to stop and stare for a second. “You must be the new barista,” she gave a small smile. “I’m Mona, I work for the Mayor’s office as the secretary over there,” she smiled as Knight rang in the multitude of drinks. “I’m Rook, nice to meet you,” you offered a smile her way. “I’m going to have to come in more. I didn’t know that this coffee shop could have even cuter baristas,” she flirted gently, passing her card over to Knight. Your cheeks flushed and she smiled lightly at that move.
You missed how in the corner, Willow was frowning at the obvious flirting being sent your way. You did notice how Mona made sure to leave her number at the counter before collecting the drink trays full of various coffees and teas. “Don’t let King work you too hard, Rook,” she smiled before she left the room. Knight took the phone number and set it underneath the counter. “I wouldn’t suggest it, those relationships never end well,” he mentioned. You nodded in return and you returned to wiping down the bar.
The first day seemed to fly by, leaving you fifty dollars richer at the end of tips and now with a cup of coffee to ease your way back to campus. You were back to being a simple (Y/N) again, not a Rook. You walked away from Cafe Rouge, unaware of just how many people’s attention you have on you. But for now, you merely sipped your beverage and enjoyed the good tidings to come; unaware just of what surprises the Cafe Rouge has in store for you.

I, as a writer, do NOT condone any of the activities in this story and only seek to write a horror romance. All pronouns are gender neutral so everyone can read and imagine themselves in the story.
It moved so quickly out there. You were pulled into the dark alley, grabbed by your collar as Mona’s bloodstained hands came to you, holding a knife to your throat and pressing you against the wall. Your breathing grew heavy as the silver blade gleamed and left a soft impression on the skin at your trachea.
“You should have a very good reason why I should let you go and not drug you and slit your throat like him,” the silver eyed girl whispered in your face. There was little remaining of the girl you had seen some in every morning to collect coffee for the office. She was cold and calm, with little pep but a burning anger burning in her eyes and under her fingertips.
“I-I.... I d-didn’t mean to come down here. I won’t tell anyone either,” you whispered as you felt the blade against your throat. Tears pricked at the edges of your eyes, “I-I’m trying to find this person who has been stalking me.... you could be blamed for that a-and the other barista going missing if you hurt me,” you whispered and felt the beginnings of tears trickle down your cheeks. Her eyes stared into yours and studied the emotions in your eyes and saw the tears stream down your cheeks.
She signed softly, moving the tears off your face and flicking them off her fingers. “I’m not fond of hurting cute people. I’m sure you understand that.” she explained and she readjusted her fingers on the blade, “However, I’m not sure if I can let you live if you know who i am and what I am going,” Mona explained as the blade dug a small line into your neck. You whimpered at the tinge of pain and her eyes showed perhaps a second of softness before growing harsh once again.
She removed her blade from your neck, but was quick to replace it with her hand wrapped around your throat. She didn’t squeeze, but rather held you in place as she put the now blood edged knife to your lips, shushing you softly. “As much as I would love to continue this conversation, Mr. O’Callahan here isn’t going to be happy sitting there bleeding out. So here’s what you’re going to do for me,” she whispered to you with a half affectionate, half dark smile. “You’re going to stand right here, and stay until I’m done with Mr. O’Callahan. He is already a goner, but he doesn’t deserve to draw this out any longer, even if he is responsible for the sexual assault of multiple members of the school’s sports teams. Then, once he’s gone, you and I are going to take a little walk while we discuss what we’re going to do with you. If you don’t make a noise, I might just walk you home and make sure that you don’t ever have a reason to go through something like this ever again. If you let anyone know what’s happening here, I will guarantee you never see the light of day. Do you understand me, Rook?” she threatened. You quickly nodded the best you could with her hands around your throat, scared of her crushing your windpipe.
Mona seemed satisfied by your response, letting go of your throat and removing the blade before turning back toward the bleeding man on the ground. Now that you had a clear look at him, you could recognize him as the school’s gymnastics coach. His right hand was separated from his body, on the ground next to him and his left hand was soon to follow with only a small amount attached to his arm. He looked pale and the pile of blood pooled at his feet. Mona seemed unafraid of stepping in the pool, leaning over to finish cutting his second hand and throwing it at your feet. Your eyes widened at the hand flopping at your throat, but your voice caught in your throat. You froze, unable to move but hands shook in terror. Your eyes couldn’t leave Mona as a smile came across her face. “You will never touch another girl like you did again. Would you like me to remove your eyes next?” she whispered with a smile.
You gagged at the thought of watching this girl remove a man’s eyes. You had seen her every morning since your job had begun, smiling at you and holding conversation despite her flustered nature. You couldn’t imagine this change, but you felt stupid for not imagining this. Mona glanced over at you, seeing your pale face and she sighed. You nearly missed what she did next, but you would never forget the blood gushing from the mans throat and the gagging coming as the man choked on his blood. Tears came to your eyes as you knew that nothing would let you forget this, and your hands shook as you grew more and more upset.
You were snapped out of it by her hand wrapping back around your throat and being pushed back into the wall. You whimpered as your shoulders hit the wall and you felt tears drip down your cheeks. “As much as a.... liability you are, it is rather cute to have a little observer watch me go about my justice,” she whispered and she raised her knee. You felt her hold your hips up, applying pressure to your nether as the blood smeared across your neck. “Your little stalker is going to be getting one hell of a show, I’m tempted to keep you and have you as my little spouse,” she whispered as she observed the fear in your eyes. “You’re not even going to try and stop me, I could choke you right now and you would just take it, wouldn’t you?” she whispered and she applied pressure around your throat.
It wasn’t impossible to breathe, but the fear made it harder and harder to focus. She chuckled at this. “No, I guess you’re too scared of me for that.” she whispered as she released the pressure, but kept a steady grip on your neck. “I bet you would even still serve me tomorrow if I came into the cafe. You would ask me how my day was, make my drinks, look pretty and let me continue to flirt with you.” she whispered with a smirk.
“Rook?” you heard someone call. You quickly looked down the alleyway and you saw the concerned green eyes of one Willow Brooks. You were thrown back against the wall, crumbling as Mona ran down the alley into the darkness. Willow hurried to your side. “Are you alright, Rook? Did they hurt you?” they asked as they helped you up. You shook your head as your eyes met those of Mr. O’Callahan, Willow’s eyes quickly following yours to the dead body.
“You must have been so scared, come on. I’ll call the police, but let me walk you home. I don’t want you alone right now.” they whispered as they took off their jacket, letting you bundle up and they held onto your arm as they helped you walk home. You missed their gaze focused on your bloodstained neck as they escorted you down the cold streets to your apartment. You noticed their texts, hoping it would be for the police and that they didn’t like calling. You had noticed their anxiety in the shop earlier, but didn’t want to say anything.
“Would it be alright if I used your restroom before heading home?” they asked. Without thinking or suspicion, you nodded and let them into your apartment. “Did you call the police?” you asked, not wanting to remove any evidence. “They’re coming here, they don’t want to take a lot of your time,” they explained. “I sent them the address when we got here. Would you like me to stay until they leave?” they asked. You stayed quiet for a second before nodding and they sat with you until the police arrived.
