Inside of you there are two opinions

One is that you’re happy that Nigel and Caleb were just friends because it was good of them to portray a close friendship between a gay man and a (assumed to be) straight man without trying to make it romantic, and you’re happy that they didn’t just stick Nigel with the closest and most convenient guy around as a way of going “ah! Representation!” without regard to the quality or implications that come with.

The other is that you wish that Caleb and Nigel were allowed to explore their relationships with queerness, Caleb growing up in an extremely homophobic environment as a military kid and Nigel with trauma from the boarding school abuse he faced, and letting them unpack that and come to face that their queerness isn’t linked to eternal hardship and they can be happy with their identities.
