olga mendeleiev has a particular habit whenever she's working late at school. she'll build a house of cards to distract herself, which of course only means she'll end up sitting there for longer, but she has to do something or she'll go mad with formulas. and it's nice to just have something else to put her hands to. the tower stands in her office, on her desk, and she tries to be careful when building. inevitably the towers do fall, of course, but she has managed to reach six tiers over the course of a couple of days. whenever she isn't building a house, or the house falls down, she packs the cards down and puts them on her desk.
over time, she notices that there seem to be more heart suit cards than there should be. it's just a casual observation at first, but she notices two tens of hearts, then two queens of hearts. well, she's not playing solitaire with it, so she doesn't really bother to think too much of it.
until one day, when she returns to school after having forgotten something on her desk, and she sees caline bustier there - doing something to the pack. caline blushes and rushes out, saying she was just looking for an eraser, but olga gets suspicious and decides to take a look through the pack. sure enough, there are now even more heart suit cards in there. there's not a single ace of spades, for instance; they're all hearts. and on the floor, in the path caline ran away, lies an ace of spades.
the next day she confronts caline during a quiet moment. caline says she saw what olga was doing, and that she thought it was a cool hobby, and she just wanted to show her appreciation but didn't feel right just saying it out loud.
olga thinks about it. then, later that day, she has an idea. after school, she doesn't do any schoolwork. she goes into caline's office and builds a house of cards on her deck. it's seven tiers. and at the top, she places two queens of hearts - and writes on them, "c+o".
