california was awful. you hated it there. the girls were bitches and the boys were assholes. it was so sunny. even when it was cold, the sun was still out. it made no sense. Jonathan was always smoking weed and it smelled awful. you had no idea how your mom hadn’t caught him yet. and his friend drove you all to school in his pizza delivery van. Argyle was cool but the vehicle was so loud and annoying.
luckily you had made some friends in your classes. not close enough to hangout with, but you weren’t totally alone at lunch or having to sit with your brother. thankfully the seniors in lenora actually acted grown, so no bullies or anything. can’t say the same for the freshman. you knew El was getting bullied but Will wouldn’t tell you who. it was sad, you guys have obviously gotten closer and you didn’t want to see her sad.
the thing you missed the most though was somehow hawkins. the small town where everybody knows everyone- you didn’t even know your neighbors here. even though it traumatized you so much, it was still your home. the home your best friend and boyfriend lived in.
no girls in california even compared to Robin. she was the funniest person you knew and had stayed by your side since elementary. she held you while you cried when Will went missing and ‘died’. and when you first got dragged into the supernatural shit you did everything you could to not involve Robin. the thought of her getting hurt because of something you pulled her into used to terrify you. but then you, her, and Steve got kidnapped and tortured by evil russians and she was immediately in too deep.
and of course there was Steve. the best part of your fucked up life. you had started dating after the whole battle at the starcourt mall, he had confessed everything he felt for you while fighting a literal monster because he was scared you would die without hearing it.
you had first realized that Steve wasn’t the complete asshole you thought he was when he saved you from a demogorgan after he had already left. you thought you were done for, then a bat appears because he couldn’t leave knowing you or Jonathan or Nancy could die. then you sort of became friends. the students at hawkins high were shocked that Steve Harrington was willingly hanging around a Byers. (even more shocked when you started dating.) then you first started to feel something when Dustin enlisted you both to check out his ‘pet’ Dart.
then he risked his life for you again and the kids. and fought Billy head on to protect them. it was safe to say your impression on Steve had definitely changed that night. hanging around him more, he would drive you to work at the mall and even pick you up on days off just to talk about nothing. Jonathan hated it which made you love it even more. the whole evil russian really locked in your feelings for him. seeing him all beat up and tortured made you feel things you never had before.
you called him every sunday. you would sit at the kitchen table and tell your boyfriend about your week. it was usually uneventful and his was much more interesting. you always ended up complaining about california and how badly you wanted to leave.
like right now, it was sunday and you had your knees pulled to your chest as the phone rang. “hey honey,” you grin at the sound of Steve voice. “how are you? how was the week?”
“hi Steve,” you sigh. “it was fine. it’s raining right now, but it’s still sunny out. weird as fuck.” your mom glares at you for cursing and you smile a little. “how was your week?”
“it’s raining here too, not sunny though. week was fine too. Keith, from family video, is up my ass about something but immediately after he yells at me i forget. and Robin is working less and less because of school which blows.” he exhales and even his breathing turns you on. “i miss you.”
“i miss you too,” you put your cheek in your hand. “how’s Robin? is she seeing anyone?” you were extra careful not to say ‘girl’ out loud for your family to hear. she had only just told you after knowing you for 10 years, so you couldn’t have any slip ups and lose her trust. and what kind of sick loser outs someone?
“see, i keep pointing girls out who i think look like lesbians but Robin always tells me im completely wrong. she says i dont have a sense for it.” you can hear the pout through the line.
“i have a great sense for it, im right like, 67 percent of the time!”
Steve laughs, “yeah cause that’s why i need you home, to help me find Robin a girlfriend.”
you laugh too, only Steve drew these kind of giggles from you. if only the kids of hawkins high could see you now, the once miserable Byers girl now giggling over the phone with Steve Harrington. “actually Steve, one thing i like about california is the food.”
“yeah? what’d you get?”
“this fast food place called in and out, its amazing. the shakes are better than hawkins. and the burgers are so good too and the fries are like, fresh.”
he huffs a laugh, “better shakes is unlikely. and you sound like a valley girl with how much you’re saying ‘like’. they’re rubbing off on you, baby.”
“i was talking about my food, you’re not supposed to butt in like that.”
“sorry sorry!” you can picture him holding his hands up in mock surrender. “anything more to say about this in out place?”
you roll your eyes with a smile. “no no, but sometime when i get over my dislike for this california place we’ll come back together and you can try it.”
“god, would i love that.” he exhales, “just imagine it. you, me, maybe a dog. west coast road trip.”
“and you drive the entire time,” you sigh wishfully. that sounds like a dream, and you know he will make it happen. when Steve wants something, it most always appears in the palm of his hand.
“whatever you want.”
Joyce comes back into the kitchen, “i know you’re talking to Steve, but i should really get back to work.” she smiles apologetically.
“yeah get her off the phone,” Jonathan calls from the living room. “annoying as hell listening to all of the sweet talking.”
“Jonathan shut up,” you huff and Steve laughs from the other side. your mom gives you a look. one she rarely uses but you know she means business when she does. “Steve i have to go. my whole families awful today.” you say sarcastically.
“okay baby, i love you. alright?”
your stomach does the same flip it always does when he tells you he loves you. “love you too, bye.” you hang up and reluctantly give the phone to Joyce.
“who says ‘i love you’ like that?” Will sasses as you walk into the living room.
“like what?”
he exaggerates with his hands, “like, like how you said it! like he’s on his deathbed.”
“god forbid i love my boyfriend.” you roll your eyes and sit down next to Will. “you’ve never been in love, don’t know what it’s like.”
“i’ve been in love and i sure don’t talk to Nance like how you talk to your obnoxious boyfriend,” Jonathan adds.
you flip them both off.
the months in california flew by. Jonathan and Will seemed to like it enough. Jonathan was clearly going through stuff with Nancy so he was pissy most of the time. Will also just missed his friends. El probably hated it too, she was getting bullied and her dad had like, just died.
the thought of going back to indiana for spring break crossed your mind frequently. like how Mike was coming here, you could go there. but your mom had said you would have to pay for the ticket, and you didn’t have a job nor money. if you had known what was going to happen you would’ve walked there.
the whole ‘El getting arrested’ thing had you worried as hell, but when you learned she was going somewhere to get her powers back? you were so so anxious. then the government shot up your house and you had to bury an agent in some random desert. and visit Dustin Hendersons long distance girlfriend so she could track down a computer where El was being hid. and lay her down in salt water in a Nevada pizza place so she could contact Max in a void and save her. then drive all the way back to hawkins. top five worst springs breaks.
the van was almost in hawkins, just entered indiana. you could see the greying sky and clouds. so many clouds. you thought you’d be ecstatic to see them, but after everything you couldn’t feel happiness. the back on the van was more squished than usual, you were sitting against the back wall of the van with Will, Mike and El in front of you both.
“you think we’re going back to lenora after this?” Will asks and you look over at your little brother. the sight almost made you frown. you knew something was going on with him, you saw him and Jonathan hug at the pizza place and Will was crying crying.
“god i hope not.”
an hour or so later you arrived in hawkins. the relief you’d thought you’d feel did not come and more of an anxiety feeling came. there was a new monster to fight and this time it was stronger and bigger and stranger.
there must’ve been like 100 cars leaving, with suitcases packed on top of the car. what had happened here? you knew this new creature had almost killed Max, but what was the cover story that made so many people leave? then you saw it, gray smoke floating up from above the trees into the air. what!?
driving into the town, you saw neighbors packing their bags, and the high school was filled with people with supplies. a charity event it looks like.
now you really see it. a building on fire still, the military directing cars and helicopters everywhere. except it wasn’t fire, it was some weird black goo? or vines or something.
the group drives onto Mikes street, and you can see Mrs. Wheeler, Nancy, Dustin, Robin, and Steve standing around Steve’s car putting boxes in the trunk. god you had missed him.
they all look up when the pizza van pulls up. their faces go from confused when Argyle steps out to a mix of happy and relieved when the rest of you do.
“mom!” Mike runs to Mrs Wheeler, El and Will are running to Dustin, Jonathan lifts Nancy up, and Steve is already in front of you and wrapping his big arms around you.
you practically melt into his touch, “oh my god you’re alive,” you feel tears well up in your eyes and press your face deeper into his chest. “you’re here!”
Steve leans back a little and cups your cheeks with his hands so he can see your face. “hey hey hey, i’m here. don’t cry, please.” his thumbs brush over your cheeks. “i’ve missed you so much, Byers.”
“i just- i couldn’t stop thinking that you were-“ you sniffle. “god,” he pulls you back in. “i didn’t even know what was happening really, we were just driving place to place.” he has no idea what you’re talking about.
“i’m here, im alive. and hey,” he lifts your face up again. “it wasn’t an earthquake. it… its bad.”
the sight of the boxes all packed up catches your eye again. “i know.” he looks to you surprised. “that’s why i was so scared.”
“you- you know? how?! i tried calling you, baby. so many calls.”
“i’ve been in a van for like, a week!” you sniffle again and Steve pulls you back into his chest. “my clothes are disgusting. i’m gross and need to shower and i’ve been in a van with four teenage boys! for a week! and i-“ he cuts you off by pressing his lips softly to yours.
your boyfriend pulls away and looks down at you with a smile. “shh, you look beautiful.”
“liar,” you laugh and pull away from Steve when Robin taps your shoulder. before she can get a word out you fling yourself onto her.
she laughs and squeezes you back. “surprised you remember me, it’s been a whole year without seeing my face.”
“i’m so happy you’re okay.” you just mumble, pulling back to smile at your best friend.
“so i take it no california girls replaced me?”
wow, you had really missed her humor. “some came pretty close, but there’s no Robin Buckleys anywhere else in this world.” you say, totally joking. the friends you’d made weren’t friends, you’ll probably never even talk to them again. but these people here? soulmates.
Jonathan calls your name, telling you they’re going to the hospital to see Max. before you run off to your brothers and friends Steve grabs your wrist and pulls you back to him, kissing you again. “are you coming?”
Steve nods to the boxes, “gotta donate these to the earthquake relief program thing.”
that makes you frown a little, “Steve! i just got back!”
“and you’re going to see me tonight? okay?”
“okay.”
he hugs you once more. “god i’ve missed you.“
♡
it was hard seeing Max like that, in a coma. she was like a little sister to you, and seeing her like that made you scared for her life and the lives of all your friends. Lucas reading to her actually made your heart hurt.
when you guys left, you went straight to the cabin to fix it up so El can stay there. it was destroyed and it was a lot of work to even begin cleaning it up. while you were sweeping some dirt a car pulled up, and your mom and Hopper, what the fuck, walked out. you and your brothers ran to Joyce and hugged her. it was so nice to just hug your mom after this weeks craziness.
then, some white dust started falling. you and the group walked to the edge of the woods to see the sky doing some weird shit. it was almost impossible to say, the sky was thundering, gray smoke rising and redness also. it felt it the sky was falling. this was going to be a serious battle.
♡
you had no idea where you and your family were going to stay now, but tonight your mom had practically forced you to still spend time with Steve and stop worrying about them.
so that’s where you were, with Steve. after taking a 30 minute shower at the Wheelers and borrowing Nancy’s clothes of course. in his beamer parked on the side of some park. it was pretty late, and you had a chocolate milkshake. the ones you had so badly missed while in lenora. you lied, in and out did not compare. Steve’s hand absentmindedly drums to the tune of the song on your thigh while you’re telling him everything. you started with El being taken to the new lab, then the agent you buried, seeing Suzie, all of it.
“and oh my god! Hoppers alive!”
your boyfriends jaw drops open a little, “what!?”
“im so fucking serious, he was at a russian prison. can you believe it!? and my mom broke him out of it.”
Steve huffs a laugh and leans back, “christ, what else could you expect in hawkins, or Ms. Byers.” he pauses then looks at you. “you’re okay?
“yeah, i mean burying the guy was hard, and not knowing where El was was terrifying. but i was really just scared you and everyone else here were in danger. i didn’t know what the new monster was, just that it was so bad they needed El. and we couldn’t contact you.” he rubs his thumb over your knuckles.
“i was worried about you too,” he murmurs. “so goddamn worried. i thought, i don’t know, maybe vecna would travel to california and get you. he got Max…” Steve trails off and you sit in silence. you lean into him more.
“well you’re back in hawkins,” he breaks the silence. “how’s it feeling? better than california already?”
“i think cailfornias back in the running now that there’s One here to worry about,” you mumble into his shoulder.
he rubs his big hands over your hair, “yeah well, hopefully he’s dead.”
“Will says he can sense him still.” you sigh for probably the tenth time. “i’m really worried about him. he was like, sobbing at the pizza place and just seemed off most of the ride.”
Steve’s face softened even more, he knew how much you cared about your brother and how protective you were. “he’s probably stressed? you cry when you’re stressed, maybe it’s a family thing.” he says in the most soothing voice possible.
you blink away the tears that are threatening to fall, “i hope so.”
“he’ll be okay.” he presses his lips to the top of your head and you lean into it. “i’m so happy you’re back.”
that makes you sit up straighter to smile at him, “me too. but now that i’m here, i can’t believe i missed this sad old place.”
“what? you’re telling me you don’t like red smoke in the sky and dust falling down all over you?”
you smile, and that smile gets bigger when he kisses you. it’s soft like he’s taking his time with you. because he is. his hands get lost in your hair as you deepen the kiss.
a thought appears about something you didn’t tell him, too caught in everything that happened to tell him the details. you pull away, “oh my god, so the day Mike got to lenora the three of them went out, and El got bullied by some bitch and El totally smashed her face in with a roller skate!”
“shit, really?” Steve grins. “was it bad?”
“i think so, i didn’t see but Jon said it was disgusting and she was really fucked up.”
“good.” he leans in to kiss you again. you set the shake down and go into it.
another thought comes to you and you go to speak it but Steve is quick to put his hand on the back of your head and keep you at his lips.
you can feel him smiling against your lips and laugh. Steve catches onto your laugh and suddenly the both of you are cracking up over absolutely nothing. it feels like nothing bad has ever happened to either of you. like you’re not going to be hunted down by a monster or like Steve doesn’t have 50 new scars or like you don’t have nightmares every night.
it’s only you and him.
