“Calypso was such a bitch to Leo!!” babes I am BEGGING you to remember her situation. She’s been stuck on an island for thousands of years and has been betrayed and abandoned by everyone she loves. “But she made Leo sleep outside!!” “But she was mean to him!!” “But but bu-” genuinely shut the fuck up. NO SHIT SHE WAS MEAN TO HIM. She expected him to do the exact same thing everyone else did. Fucking OF COURSE she made Leo sleep outside he’s a random ass guy. USE YOUR HEAD. “But in TOA she shamed him for the only thing that made him happy!!” She literally didn’t?? She didn’t say shit about Leo’s interest in machines. What she was mad about was the fact that Leo compared their relationship to a machine and if I was her? Yeah bro I’d be pissed off too AND SO WOULD YOU. “Oh but she just wanted to go and do things in the mortal world instead of hanging out with Leo!!” NO SHIT???? SHES BEEN TRAPPED ON A FUCKING ISLAND HER WHOLE LIFE OFC SHES GONNA GO AND EXPLORE GOOD GOD. You’ll say this but then you won’t say ANYTHING about the fact Leo spends more time with machines than actual people INCLUDING CALYPSO. “Oh but she was just overall mean!!” CONSIDER HER SITUATION YOU DIPSHIT. She got her immortality and her powers, something she’s had basically her ENTIRE LIFE, taken away of course she’s gonna be a bit of a bitch when that happens and she has to go on a quest immediately in the middle of a huge fight between gods instead of just enjoying herself. If I’m being honest most of the Calypso hate is unreasonable and misogynistic. You guys just hate it when a woman isn’t perfect.

Calypso supporters (for EPIC specifically) piss me off.

They always say she didn't understand, that she was just a child.

A: She's literally a goddess? And hundreds/thousands of years old. Children and DOGS understand the word "no."

2. They always compare her to Circe and the suitors in EPIC.

A: Right away, Circe made it exceedingly clear to Odysseus that she will defend her nymphs, and why she doesn't trust men: because every man who came to her island that she gave a chance raped and attacked her and her nymphs. Odysseus told her "no" one time in response to her "advances," and she immediately understood and helped him get home. That's a key difference between them. And comparing her to the suitors? Cool, hope she meets the same fate!

3. Calypso outright threatened Odysseus. She told him there was no escape, that he couldn't do anything because she's a goddess. And she expected him to like and love her? People defend her for it? Ew no. Stockholm syndrome ain't a thing here, babes.

4. She didn't even actually apologize in NSFLY. She's like "IF I pushed you," "IF I came on too strong" when she was so much worse than that; so much, so, in fact, that she drove Odysseus to try and kill himself. There is no coming back from that, and no redemption.

5. She made herself the victim. She abused him for 7 whole years and then acted like he was the one who wronged her. These are called the consequences of your actions.

6. SHE HAD A CHANCE. If Calypso had listened to Odysseus telling her no, they probably could have become friends. She could have listened to him, he could have sympathized with her being cast out, and she could have helped him get home. She made the conscious decision at every single turn to keep pushing him and repeatedly tried to SA him.

And if you have a problem with this? Unfollow me. I don't want people who defend SA anywhere near me.

All this to say, I have absolutely nothing against Barbara Wangui (because hating characters and hating actors are for some reason growing intertwined). If anything, the fact that I'm so enraged by Calypso is a testament to her acting skills. The actress is NOT the character, and if anyone hates on or threatens her because of someone she portrayed? Absolutely tf not.

Am I the only one who thinks that the idea that Odysseus 'loved/came to love Calypso as a friend' is painfully ridiculous in the concept of her character in the musical?

Not saying he didn't start to care for her because trauma bonding and isolation, but the way her stans frame it, and even use the words 'friendzone' sometimes, implies Calypso was ever his friend, which is incorrect, because Calypso never treated Odysseus as her friend, nor she showed she wanted a friend.

This is why their whining about her loneliness falls so flat on me and I have no sympathy for it. Because if she truly was so lonely and desperate for the company of another sentient being, she would have given up and accepted that Odysseus didn't want her in that way, but she shows no change on her intentions. In her two songs, she frames her relationship with Odysseus in a strict romantic/sexual nature (soon into bed we'll climb/handsome/love of my life/I hate I fell in love with you, etc) and there isn't a single indication that she ever thought his opinion in the subject mattered. He was going to be her lover, whatever he wanted or not.

And then her stans are horrified that people still read SA on their interactions? How can you not read that when her lyrics are literally showing how she doesn't want to see him as anything but hers in a sexual/romantic nature? Where exactly is the friendship there? Even when she is trying to get him away from the ledge she still frames it as if they are lovers and how bad it would for her if he died.

For Odysseus to have loved Calypso as a friend it would have been required for her to treat him as a friend. But Calypso didn't want that and she had seven freaking years to change that dynamic, she didn't, so there is no 'friendship' there.

Y’all I have so many feelings about Epic: the musical. Hatred for multiple characters is a big one!

Obviously, like any other sane individual I despise Calypso and Antinuous. If you don’t, you’re objectively wrong, I don’t make the rules.

I do however have very complicated feelings about Eurylochus. On one hand I understand the he’s only human and I get the doubt of Odysseus, especially later on, but on the other hand- bro was so dumb and hypocritical and it genuinely makes me so angry lmao. He expects perfection from his captain but then immediately turns around and goes against the orders he’s given and makes the exact same or worse mistakes of his own. And him blaming Odysseus for polities death in luck runs out will forever ruin him for me.

And don’t forget Eurylochus was second in command! He was also responsible for the crew, and literally everything he does harms that cause! He sows doubt and blame towards the captain and openly blames him the deaths of their men, deaths that literally could not have been avoided! He blames Odysseus for not being omnipotent and knowing exactly how to do everything perfectly. He was not only hypocritical and didn’t think anything through, but he also immediately got the crew killed every time he made a decision of his own. Opening the windbag against orders? Get ready for Poseidon to kill hundreds of your comrades! Killing the cows even though Odysseus begged you not to? Zeus’ turn for some carnage! He was at least partially responsible for every problem as second in command, as he said himself “if you want all the power you must carry all the blame.” By his own logic his position would make him partially to blame. And then to expect Odysseus to take the blame?? Especially when the thing Zeus is threatening them over was directly his fault this time? Lmao absolutely not. The arrogance is astounding!

Also people who get upset at Odysseus choosing himself in thunder bringer make me laugh cause really how many of us would choose differently? His crew mutinied against him, stabbed him, knocked him out, and went directly against what he asked of them. Literally immediately once he was not longer in charge they committed a crime against the god of the sun that he begged them not to do, why would he sacrifice himself for their error when he literally warned them? Especially when they don’t seem to know at all what they’re doing and would most likely get themselves killed anyway lmao.
