Fallout 76: shelters

Not the same as the camps but close. Also spoilers

On to the shelter stuff! It's not hard actually. To kick off the shelter quest, you go to any train station and read the poster, which gives you the location of (get ready for it) Vault 51! Yes! So you go there and Vault 51 is totally sealed up, but there's a hatch nearby and you can go in and start the (really easy) shelter quest. It explains what was going on here and how you can get one, and why nobody seems to have noticed it, and I feel kinda bad for the people who were previously here, because I'm that kind of person. :(

The shelter quest gives you the basic "utility room" shelter, which is a nice little start. It's got a leak and the lighting is bad and there's that damn box in the corner you can't do anything about, but it's a start! It's got a floor hatch as an entrance.

FO1ST peeps will get another shelter type (probably in December) and there'll be the Really Big One available in the atom shop, probably also in December, in case you needed a crapload of extra room.

The terminal at the quest start gives a lot of info about the shelters, so it should be pretty self-evident, and it appears you can lock your shelter, too. The interesting thing to me is that you can do a lot of your camp stuff within the shelter, *but not all of it*. You can't grow crops or have allies in the shelter, frex, which is a stone drag, but I kinda get it for game balance; if you could put everything safely in the shelter, all you'd need on the surface is your camp startup thing and the hatch. It would be actually incredibly difficult for anyone to find your place. Which... has an appeal in some ways.

So, I get it. The shelter is for decorating and making a nice living space inside. Shelter budgets are apparently bigger than camp budgets, so you can kinda go nuts, and you can toggle the snap-to on or off and put things floating in midair and weird stuff like that. And if you die in a shelter, you don't lose anything except maybe your pride and trust in fellow players.

Also: some of the challenges have changed, they've reduced the requirements for "build stuff in a camp/workshop" to a MUCH more manageable 760 items, and yes shelter stuff counts toward that. So at least there's a few ways to still earn atoms.
