GUYS GUYS i found this thing called campfire write and holy fuck. holy fuck.

it’s this writing platform ( could also be used for rpgs at first glance ) called campfire blaze, and oh my god. oh my god. 

first, of all it’s web based ( which is one of the issues i had with scrivener ), so it sync to stuff and you don’t have to download anything !

these are some of the different sections where you can organize stuff ( it didn’t all fit in one scroll, but theres also places to organize species cultures and items ). 

for characters you can add different pages for each character and select which attributes you want to include as well as link to other characters/pages and describe the relation 

(this is only a half finished page. you can also link items, places, and other world building stuff) . there are also entirely different pages where you can add more blocks for like backstories and stuff !!

you can also add different timelines (YOU CAN TRACK MULTIPLE POVS !!) and add more details and see in both a closeup/timeline view. AND IN THIS TIMELINE you can add events which link to your character which will automatically construct a character arc in the arcs section ??? which is great for visualization ??? rekglkegklre;gke;rl

( up to this point i can no longer take photos because my laptop apparently just Cannot Handle it and it wont load my tumblr )

 you can add relationship webs which is absolutely great if youre trying to figure out an organization's hierarchy ! i only have two characters written down so fartheres even an encyclopedia ??? where you can store info ??

AND A MAGIC SYSTEM ??? TO TRACK STUFF ?? what the FUCK its so good

there are also places for flow charts and religions and language tracking that i haven’t explored yet but holy FUCK i love it so much so far

and its mostly free !! honestly it has more utility in the free version then you probably need but !! i would def recommend checking it out

Sorting out a magic system

One of the things that keeps me from properly sitting down and writing new chapters of fic (especially my longer ones that involve some dose of magic, like What Doesn't Kill You) is defining the "rules" of the world I'm in.

I don't mean inventing them wholesale; that'd make my fic an AU, and that's not my particular flavor of jam. But I do take the existing magic seen in Yu-Gi-Oh! and tweak it to my desires, often to create more interesting plots and character development.

For example, Yu-Gi-Oh! takes the ancient Egyptian concepts of ba and ka and simplifies them, turning them into a mechanic to explain why regular ol' humans are able to "summon" these incredible, god-like creatures "from another dimension," ranging from horrific spider-like demons to awe-inspiring white dragons. But there are rules: no one has more than one ka, and only the special Millennium Item holders can even summon more than one ka, because captured ka (in stone tablets) can be summoned by them. Ka can also be developed over time, starting out as weak and puny and turning into fearsome creatures of great destruction... despite not really having a physical form until they are "summoned." But once they are, they can save their wielder's life with their powers, ranging from webs and swords to their own body.

One needs to have a certain amount of heka, or magical skill, to even be able to see ka, let alone manifest one, but that doesn't mean you aren't impacted by someone else's ka when it, say, destroys the building you're standing near.

And then you've got ancient tomes and prophecies that dictate a chosen Pharaoh will be able to summon three special "god" beasts, but bad stuff and reincarnation happens, and other people can summon them, and... you see what I mean about magic systems being complicated? Writing all this stuff out when you know it'll influence your story is supposed to be helpful, rather than a hindrance. It means I won't accidentally write myself into a corner with a character doing something they shouldn't, or an overpowered character that comes across as a Sue, or something like that.

To that end, I'm trying out Campfire Blaze, to see how it differs from my current preferred writing tool, Scrivener. It seems more oriented toward Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Steampunk writers, RPG game masters, graphic novelists, and so on, but we'll see how it fares for something like an epic fanfic.

I made a Sykk family tree last night! I was going to post it super late but then the sleeping pills hit so I fell asleep with my iPad next to me on the bed lol. But I made this with Campfire Blaze, which is a very cool worldbuilding/novel planning website. This used the relationship web tool where you can select different line colors and assign them different colors to denote different types of relationships.

The lines with arrows are one sided, used to show only the first person knows out of that relationship, like Yuno didn’t know his mom wasn’t his bio mom or Ray didn’t know his father came from an extremely wealthy family. I ended up having to write on the screenshot and add birthyears. They’re all in the 1900s(Besides the one 1800s) so the 96 for the twins means they were born in 1996. I was very limited on space, so extended family got smushed together and the numbers on the cousins is the range of years they were born. But all the aunts and uncles are married and have 2+ kids.

So backstory. Bruno I was a doctor or scientist in Japan who created some super common over the counter medication. Family got super rich, Bruno II moved to the US to expand, and eventually made company HQ in the US and settled in Greenwich, Connecticut(A super rich and snobby town) and had a family. They kept the Japanese branch(promised to the second son) and expanded to Europe(led by the eldest daughter.) The twins were much younger than their siblings, so their children are significantly younger than their cousins.

Yuno's mom had fertility issues, which led to her husband having an affair with a young employee. His parents were outraged, but when they learned she carried a son, they paid her off(like high six figures) to keep the boy if she went off to raise the girl and never tell her about her heritage. Well, she eventually did. Meanwhile, Sykkuno was raised as his mom's biological child to everyone. And... Yeah.

I wish you could add birth years to this web but I also get why not but this looks really nice.

I’ve been using Campfire for writing a lot

I was honestly just sitting down to write some smutty ideas I had about a bossy princess and a dedicated butler who follows her every word, but then I started thinking about her using magic. Then I had to write a magic system. Then I had to write a religion around the magic system, then a kingdom for her to rule and a place for her butler to be born into and whoops now I have an idea for a story surrounding the sexy parts and fuck I just wanted to write smut but now I’m invested in these characters I wrote and their lives as well as the smut. Guess I got back into writing again lmao

This lil critter is amazing for people who need a neatly ordered place to put their characters, items, locations, worldbuilding ,etc. etc.! Or you just like doing it for the funsies without anything in mind lol!

While there's both lifetime and subscription-based payments, you can also use it completely for free with some minor limitations.

It is a bit complex a first BUT you get the hang of it eventually! I'm sure there's also tutorials around to help you get a hand o work on it. IIRC it's also being updated and worked on for better, so i'd recommend at least giving it a chance and see how it suits you!
