Beloved Canadian ‘90s TV Reboot. (No, not that one. (Not yet.))

The Tragically Hip (legendary Canadian rock band, if you’re somehow not aware) has provided the theme music for the new Anne of Green Gables series reboot, which is written by Moira Walley-Beckett – the Canadian screenwriter responsible for some of the most hardcore episodes of Breaking Bad. The Canadian Content is off the charts. I can’t handle it. Also… if it was gay in the ‘90s, I imagine it’ll be gay as FUCK today. 

I auditioned for this show a while back, before I really knew what was going on. I feel like this information would have been helpful at the time. Now I understand why the reader said, “I wouldn’t let my daughter watch this.” This show about a little girl growing up in the Canadian maritimes. 

Guys, listen. You gotta watch this show and make the ratings happen so that CBC knows that reboots of Canadian shows from the ‘90s are desirable. There are some people trying to get some things going here.

My first experience with Canadian band was their debut, “The Smell of Our Own”, in 2003. Unashamedly gay, led by the quavering vocals of front man Joel Gibb, there was a shamelessness and an urgency to their music.But a lot has changed in thirteen years. Sure, in “Trump’s America”, it’s not going to be a cakewalk to be LGB or T, but gay marriage is legal in North America, and a vast majority of folks are finding that “love wins” as concerns such things. All of which leaves Gibb and his band to abandon the indie rock trappings of their sound and embrace what is called “Canadianna” - the Canadian version of America. Steel guitars and loping waltzes predominate on Gibb’s stab at country music, with guest appearances from Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys (track 3), Ron Sexsmith (track 6&14), and a chorus of Feist, Rufus Wainwright, and Mary Margaret O’Hara (track 12). It’s certainly not the Hidden Cameras I first fell in love with - it’s not even the same genre as their last record, “Age”. But the songwriting here is on point, and when Gibb turns on his wavering voice, it’s not hard to get sucked into his form of emotive poetry - even if the idiom now is more suitable to barn dances than to rock clubs. Worth a listen!
