Of the myriad movies and characters from pop-culture that have influenced me, one of the earliest and most powerful for me was Gene Wilder’s legendary portrayal of Willy Wonka.
I imprinted pretty hard on this darkly mischievous, dandy miscreant with a hidden heart of gold, with a penchant for quoting the classics and delivering devastating shade. I especially love the moment at the end of the film when, after being enraged in disappointment at the lack of trustworthy Golden Ticket holders, Wonka becomes suddenly softened when Charlie selflessly gives the Gobstopper back by gently and silently placing it on Wonka’s desk.
Cradling the Gobstopper softly in his hand, Wonka whispers a modified quote adapted from “Merchant of Venice” under his breath, only loud enough for himself to hear — a sort of personal mantra reminding himself that there is still good to be given and received in the world, if only you give it a chance.
Which is why I’ve placed this new ink on my arm in a position that is always visible to me, and to others, as I reach out my hand to give or receive, always grateful for the chance at either.
Merry Christmas, Happy 50th Birthday, and Happy New Year / New Decade to me. I am grateful and hopeful for more good deeds to come.
