Clark Devouring Himself
Cap’n Clark from the Backrooms
eek >_< !! hes only many appels tall !!
you are a pirate !
Architect of armchairs. Captain of coffee tables. Sultan of sofas.
I actually feel a bit bad for Captain/Pirate/Monster Clark. I thought he was the scariest thing in the world while I was watching the movie, but now that I've had several hours to reflect, his place in the story actually makes me sad. He didn't choose to be made. He didn't choose to be so hurtful toward everyone he laid eyes on. Those were Real Clark's choices. Real Clark's anger imprinted on the version of him created by The Backrooms, and over time, Clark kept choosing to be miserable and hostile and abusive to his environment until it was the only thing The Backrooms could remember him for.
If Clark had chosen to change and be kinder, maybe Pirate Clark would just be, idk, Still-Life Clark. And that's just fucking heartbreaking, by the way. To know that you could have been a peaceful creature if your creator had just taken steps to change and break the cycle.
I think, in some way, if we view Captain Clark as a sentient being, we can view his murder of Clark as an act of anger and revenge. Clark says to him, "We don't have to change," thus assuming that Clark's monster (had to make a Frankenstein reference at some point, with how I've been describing this) wants to be the way that Real Clark is, and that Clark believes that Captain Clark is better off killing and hurting and eating people as part of his nature.
What if he doesn't want to do that? What if he wants to be a regular Still-Life like everyone else, but Clark's hostility has warped him and turned him into a real monster that hurts people?? What if his existence is painful because he's doomed to reflect the worst traits of a man who isn't willing to change for the better???
I'm sorry, Captain Clark. You deserved a kinder father. I'm sorry for being scared of you in the theater. You just have daddy issues. You're like me. Let's be friends. Moots on tumblr. Chat on Discord. That sort of thing.
