x / Captain Kaos
Mysticons Captain Kaos Episode
Arkayna and Zarya's grandparents are coming over. While Arkayna wants to take Zarya shopping for clothes that are more appropriate for a princess, as her grandmother can be strict, Zarya doesn't want to change for family. An argument ensues, and Zarya storms off.
Zarya goes to the Sky Pier, where Kitty is preparing for the Pink Skull's next trip, which is a treasure hunt. Zarya begins to help, and Kitty invites her on the treasure hunt, as it's not far from Drake City, but Zarya says that she has family coming over. Kitty notices that Zarya doesn't seem happy about the family coming, but before Zarya can explain what happened, Captain Kaos comes. While Zarya and the Pink Skulls initially hold Captain Kaos off, an army of crab creatures overwhelm them, and most of the Pink Skulls and Zarya are tied up. Zarya sees that Kasey haven't been tied up yet, and manages to distract Captain Kaos, and secretly motions for Kasey to escape. He jumps in the ocean and swims to shore. However, Kitty doesn't notice this. Captain Kaos takes control of the ship.
Back at the Stronghold, Arkayna is wondering where Zarya is, and wonders if she's purposely skipping meeting the grandparents. Piper points out how Zarya is super excited about family, but Sharise adds that Arkayna was making it sound like Zarya had to change who she was to please them. Arkayna defends herself, saying that she knows the grandparents, and Zarya should trust her. Just then, Kasey comes, soaked. He explains everything that happened, and the Mysticons go to save Zarya.
Meanwhile, as Kitty and Zarya were the ones who led the mutiny against Captain Kaos, he locked them in a room away from everyone else, so they can't lead them. As they look for a way to escape, Kitty asks Zarya about the grandparents coming over. Zarya initially wants to just focus on esape, but realizes that Captain Kaos will be less suspicious if they talk about things other than escaping. She tells Kitty everything, and Kitty expresses disgust that Arkayna wants to change her. Zarya knows that Arkayna usually doesn't force her to change, and admits that part of her wants the grandparents to like her. She asks Kitty if she should just try to please the grandparerents, but Kitty tells her to just be herself.
Meanwhile, the Mysticons and Kasey are flying on their dragons, with Kasey riding with Em, and Em notices that Arkayna seems distracted. Em reassures Arkayna that Zarya is strong, and will be able to defend herself until they come. Arkayna admits that she feels bad for the fight, as she loves Zarya for who she is, and that Zarya shouldn't pretend to be something she's not. She also says that she hopes that Zarya is fine, as she doesn't want the last thing she says to Zarya being her complaining about something as stupid as how she dresses. They see the Pink Skulls ship, and fly towards it. As they land, Sharise notices a storm is approaching, and says that they better hurry.
Back at the pirate ship, Zarya and Kitty free themselves, and find the rest of the Pink Skulls. Kitty is worried when Kasey isn't with the Pink Skulls, as she wonders if Captain Kaos threw him overboard, but Zarya reassures her that Kasey escaped, and probably told the Mysticons what happened. The Pink Skulls and Zarya manage to get on deck, and another fight ensues. Captain Kaos is about to defeat them, but the Mysticons and Kasey reach the ship in time to help. Captain Kaos is thrown overboard, and the Mysticons and Pink Skulls begin heading to Drake City.
On the way to Drake City, the storm Sharise saw comes, making it difficult to fly the ship. Arkayna says that they can use their dragons, and Kitty, snaps back, saying that there's not enough room for the Pink Skulls, and retorts that it makes sense that someone raised with royalty can be so selfish to only care about her and her friends, but admits she thought Arkayna was better. Zarya stands up for Arkayna, saying that she would never leave innocent people behind. Arkayna reveals that her plan was to tie the dragons to the boat, as they might be able to help power the boat through the difficult winds. Kitty says that that's a good idea, and they do it. It works, and Kitty apoligizes to Arkayna, saying that she was angry about what Arkayna said to Zarya. Arkayna admits she was wrong about it, and she and Zarya make up. Zarya and Kitty share a quick kiss before the Mysticons leave the ship.
Zarya and Arkayna reach the palace, where the grandparents are waiting for them. While the grandfather is happy to meet Zarya, the grandmother critisizes her for not being a proper princess. Zarya is more hurt by this then she expects, as family is important to her, but Arkayna stands up for her, saying that the grandmother doesn't know Zarya, so she can't judge her. The grandmother turns to Queen Goodfey and tells her to control her daughters, but Queen Goodfey just smiles.
Headcanon: Many of the Pink Skull’s Members were Not From Zarya’s Village
I have a theory/headcanon that not all of the Pink Skulls come from the same village. I believe that, other than Kitty, Kasey, and Zarya, the other Pink Skulls members came from other places.
The first evidence that suggests this is how Kitty talks about becoming a Sky Pirate. When talking about being captured, she only mentions herself, Kasey, and Zarya. This suggests that the other members of the Pink Skulls weren’t captured at the same time as they were, or else Kitty would have mentioned them. This could mean that the other members were captured either before or after Zarya, Kasey, and Kitty.
The second piece of evidence that suggests this is how Zarya seemed closer to Kitty and Kasey then the other Pink Skulls. Her close bond with Kitty is explained by them liking each other (though I don’t know if she had those feelings from the start of the series, or if they grew later on), and she did seem surprised at how much Kasey grew up. However, she did not seem to be in a large hurry to greet the unnamed members of the Pink Skulls. This leads me to think that she’s closer to Kitty and Kasey than the other Pink Skulls, which could likely be due to them being from the same village.
The third thing that leads me to believe that they are not all from the same village is simply Captain Kaos’s actions. If they were all from the same village, he would have to decide to grab any children that he could from one specific village. Unless he has a strong dislike for Zarya’s village, I see no reason why he would want to get all the children from there. It seems to make more sense that the crew comes from different villages.
I admit my theory does have one potential flaw. If all of the villages that Captain Kaos took children from were destroyed, just like Zarya’s was, I have a feeling it would be a big deal for the realm, involving the Royal Family. And as Arkayna would roughly be twelve by the time it ended (that’s how old I’m guessing Zarya was when she escaped) she would definitely remember it. Unless the Royal Family didn’t think the destruction of multiple villages was important enough to investigate, or outside of the family’s jurisdiction (I doubt the Royal Family controls the entire world), it would have been mentioned earlier, as even if Captain Kaos wasn’t stopped sooner, Arkayna would have heard something about it. The only way this could work is if Captain Kaos usually just captures children, but for some reason, wanted to destroy Zarya’s village. However, if that were the case, then it makes no sense that the other Pink Skull members don’t want to go home.
How Kitty, Kasey, and Zarya got Captured.
In “Skies of Fire, Zarya said that Kitty could have escaped, but she went to protect Zarya. My headcanon is that while Zarya’s village was getting raided, she saw Captain Kaos about to capture Kasey. Zarya helped Kasey escape, getting caught in the process. Kitty went to save Zarya, telling Kasey to find somewhere to hide. Kasey followed Kitty secretly, and they were caught as well.
Why no one helped Zarya’s village (Warning: This is fairly dark)
Captain Kaos knew that he could easily be arrested if he wasn’t careful. Therefore, every part of his plan was created to ensure that officials had as little chance of finding him as possible, which worked.
First, he choose a small village far away from Drake City. He knew that a larger place or somewhere close to a large city (especially Drake City) would cause more outrage.
Second, he ensured that the raid was quick, and that no one escaped. If people escaped, they would be able to tell others what happened. He also wanted the raid to be quick, so no one notices until it’s too late.
Third, he ensured that when he took people to work for him (so he had a crew to help him) he only took children. He believed that children know less about how the world works, and therefore would have a more difficult time getting help.
By the time people from outside the village knew what happened, the village was in ruins and there was no sign that anyone escaped alive. Drake city officials tried to find the culprit, but since Captain Kaos was careful about not leaving anything behind, there were no clues connecting him to the crime.
Captain Kaos was careful about who his crew interacted with, as he was worried that one of them would reveal the incident. He limited their interactions with outsiders, and used threats in order to ensure that they only said what Captain Kaos wanted them to say. He also made it seem that the reason no one was looking for them was because they don’t care, and eventually, the Pink Skulls believed that lie. This made them reluctant to open up to others, as they assume that people may suspect that they were kidnapped, but don’t care.
Over time, stories about the raided village died down, and eventually, this led Drake City to stop supporting efforts in hunting down the culprit, as it was going on for a while without success. People slowly began to forget about the story, and the Pink Skulls completely gave up on getting help, so they didn’t tell anyone.
Captain Kaos as a Main Villain?
Now that the Mysticons managed to free people from the Spectral Hand, Captain Kaos would be released as well. This made me wonder something: could Captain Kaos be the next main villain?
He did fight against the Mysticons once before, when he tried to kidnap Zarya and the Pink Skulls, so he would have a reason to fight against them again. And if the Spectral Hand is still relevant (maybe getting the people to want to revive it stronger), he would want it.
Another interesting thing is that according to an interview Sean Jara and Matt Ferguson did with Overly Animated, an episode idea that would happen if the series continued is the Mysticons saving the Pink Skulls. Given their history with Captain Kaos, I can see Captain Kaos being involved, especially since the show would need a new villain.
The reason I don't think this would be a good idea is something I've talked about before: too much focus on Zarya (I know I mention Arkayna got too much focus to, but Zarya's the important one in this situation). Since Captain Kaos has more history with Zarya, it would give Zarya more focus. I want the main villain to have care about all the Mysticons equally. And if the villain had to focus on any of the Mysticons, I would focus on Em or Piper, who had less attention.
In short, while it's possible that Captain Kaos would be a next main villain, I wouldn't want that to happen. While I would have no problem with Captain Kaos coming back for another episode, I wouldn't want a main villain that's extra focused on Zarya.
Did Zarya Tell Proxima About Captain Kaos?
I was thinking about the part where Proxima was talking about how the Spectral Hand corrupted several people, including Captain Kaos. However, as Captain is a title, if Proxima did get all the information from the mask, she would likely have learned Captain Kaos by his first name. However, Proxima referred to him as Captain Kaos, which is how the Mysticons would refer to him.
I at first thought that it was for the audience's sake, but I doubt it. Proxima didn't mention Reginald Bane by name, but he was in the flashback when she mentioned a skylancer, so it was clear it was talking about General Bane. I don't see why they couldn't do that for Captain Kaos, calling him "(first name) Kaos" and showing Captain Kaos so the audience knows who she's talking about.
One problem with this theory is simply when. There wasn't a large amount of time where Proxima was friends with the Mysticons before putting on the mask, so while it's possible Zarya mentioned Captain Kaos, considering she didn't talk to the Mysticons about it until needed, it's likely that she didn't tell Proxima about Captain Kaos. The one time she could have mentioned it was on the way to the palace, where Proxima mentioned a giant parrot, and Zarya told her then.
This isn't the only option. It's possible that Captain Kaos' first name really is "Captain", either being named so expecting him to be a captain, or him changing his name.
