Swapped Duties, chapter 1

When the Dragonborn Tun-Ei returns to Solstheim from another adventure in Dwemer ruins, the conversation afterward gets a little out of hand, leading to Tun-Ei and Captain Veleth deciding to accompany each other for each other's jobs for a day each to decide who has it hardest.

Naturally, Geldis and Dreyla find this hilarious.

Modyn and Geldis at the Netch.

Geldis Sadri: "Captain Veleth! Good to see you again. What can I get you?"

Captain Veleth: "How about a hundred Dunmer armed to the teeth?"

Geldis Sadri: "I'm afraid we're completely out of them at the moment. Sounds like you've had a rough day."

Captain Veleth: "There's no reason to bourdon [sic]you with my troubles. How about I just settle for some mazte and we'll forget I mentioned it."

Riiju-Lei: *walks through the bulwark out of ravenrock* this is? What morrowind is like?

Xelzaz: not exactly serjo, but close. The cities are far more beautiful, I’d love to show you around blacklight some day.

Sero: oh yes, I know all the best places away from the tourist traps~

Riiju-Lei: tourist traps? *stops and pulls up an ash yam to see what it is*

Taliesin: oh yes, when the empire brought their cosmopolitan lifestyle to morrowind, the dunmer took full advantage of them~

Sero: They saw our lives as ‘exotic’ compared to theirs and their want for our ‘authentic’ artefacts to take home and show off to their friends and families became a major boom to our economy. And they’re so very easy to scam, ha!

Lucien: oh yes my aunt still shows off her ‘authentic’ telvanni beetle robes at dinner parties. Well, she did until-

Kaidan: until what?

Lucien: until I pointed out that it was just painted mudcrab chitin and I ‘ruined’ her dinner party. I got in so much trouble for that.

Xelzaz: *cackles* oh yes I’ve seen those! We even buy them as novelties to gift to ‘nobles’ who demand to speak to high ranking house membe- *hits the deck as a fireball suddenly comes flying in his direction*

Kaidan: Whot the f- *grabs Taliesin and yoinks him out of the way holding him tight as another comes flying* you okay?

Taliesin: *grabs his face and kisses him* thank you. *pulls out his dagger and readies his magic* what threw that?! I can’t see anything through this ash!

Riiju-Lei: *squints his eyes and looks ahead to see a redoran guard surrounded by ashen figures* I think it’s the captain!! *draws his sword and runs into the fray, slicing through one of the figures only for it to explode into a pile of dust* Captain are you alri- *coughs as another suddenly pounces on him burning through the fabric of his armour* UGHH!!! *reaches up grabbing it by the face and moving to strike… only for the creature to freeze in his grasp*

Ash spawn: *groans and tenses up, ash flaking from its shape before revealing an almost dunmer like creature beneath it with 3 red lifeless eyes… an ash vampire*

Riiju-Lei: *shakily stares up at it then at the others past it as they approach ready to kill him and the captain* shit-

The ash vampire: *suddenly lurches up off of the dunmer and slashes through the ash spawn ripping the heart stones from their chests to protect its master before turning to attack the captain perceiving anyone who isn’t Riiju as a threat*

Riiju-Lei: NO- *grabs hold of its leg and yanks it down to the ground before grabbing his sword and stabbing it through the chest killing it instantly* UGH!!

The ash vampire: *groans and croaks out a death rattle as it’s body crumbles into powder* lord- dagoth… Ur…

Riiju-Lei: *stumbles to his feet watching as it turns to a pile of ash like the others*

Captain Veleth: *shakily gets to his feet* gods, thank the gods you turned up when you did. I thought I was a goner, I- lad?…

Riiju-Lei: *eyes transfixed on the heart stone left pulsating in the ash* … *reaches down and takes hold of it, holding it up to his face as he feels an oddly familiar energy from it*

Captain Veleth: lad?… *goes to reach for him as team dragonborn catches up to them*

Xelzaz: Serjo Lei, are you alright?

Inigo: *rummages through his bag pulling out a healing potion and handing it to the captain* here my friend.

Captain Veleth: thank you- *takes it and downs it*

Sero: Sera, what happened here?

Captain Veleth: the men and I have come to calling these creatures Ash spawn. Don’t know where they come from, they just emerge from the ash and keep attacking the bulwark. I’d be dead like my man here if it hadn’t of been for your friend but… is he alright?

Taliesin: *gently places a hand to Riiju’s shoulder* Leilei?…

Riiju-Lei: *utterly transfixed by the strange stone, feeling it pulsing like a heartbeat, in tune with his own, like a drum pounding in his head* I’m… so… warm…

Kaidan: maybe we should sit down friend you-

Riiju-Lei: *smiles* in the mountain I’m warm…

Lucien: I think the stone is doing something to him?…

Riiju-Lei: *not even noticing the blood pouring from his forehead as his birthmark begins to split open* in the mountain I wait…

Kaidan: *reaches to take the stone* Riiju snap out of it!

“WAKE. UP.”

Riiju-Lei: *eyes suddenly rolling to the back of his head as his forehead splits open revealing a third eye, visions of a gold mask and a towering figure made of brass flashing in his mind* ughh-…agh… *drops the stone and falls back onto the ground, body convulsing as he suffers a seizure, hearing his blood thumping loudly in his head as his new third eye stares up at the world around him taking in the panicked faces surrounding him*

Inigo: MY FRIEND!

Taliesin: GET HIM ON HIS SIDE QUICKLY!!

Xelzaz: *frantically searching through his bag for a potion or anything that might help* Let’s get him as far away from these rocks as we can!

*a few hours later*

Riiju-Lei: *blearily blinks awake back in the wretching netch, body in agony, and his forehead so very sore* what?… *looks around the room to see everyone seated around him, waiting for him to wake up*

Xelzaz: *pats his hand* and carefully lifts the cloth from his forehead suddenly allowing him to see even more than he did before* Hey?… are you okay?…
