Amelia normally hated the tart, seedy fruit. But now that she was happily five months pregnant, she couldn’t get enough of this one strawberry ice cream they found while looking for things to put into the nursery.

Steve, husband and father of the century, left to go get it when the cravings got really bad.

She gave a tired but happy smile. “Yes, bless you,” she answered him, gently grabbing his wrist, tugging on him to lean down so she can kiss him tenderly.

“For me it was… I’d hoped it would be Betty. I wanted it to be her so badly, and then when the time came nothing showed up. But I guess… if we’d really been meant for each other, then the lack of marks wouldn’t have mattered.” She didn’t blame Betty for that, for moving on to look for her true soulmate, she deserved to find someone who could make her happy after all, but it still ached deep down that Bryce wasn’t the person who could do that. Her faith in soulmates had been shaky enough before then, seeing how people who the universe pushed together weren’t guaranteed happiness, or even a loving union, but Betty had been the final blow. After that she’d started wearing turtlenecks and pants and gloves even in summer, everything to minimize the chances of contact that would make your mark appear when your skin made contact with your soulmate’s for the first time. Not that it stood out that much; plenty of people made similar choices to avoid meeting their soulmates for a variety of reasons, from having already found a partner to not wanting to be tied down. Really, the only reason she’d even considered trying to find them was just so that she could at least be honest about why she couldn’t be there for them and not leave them wondering if they were unwanted and unloved.

“Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t afford to do it. Like you said, this kind of life… it’s not something I’d wish on a person I cared about. Not to mention that there’s a good chance I’ll outlive them because I’m nearly impossible to kill. But it’s just… it’s not fair. You deserve to be happy more than anyone I know.”

Ever since the attack Bucky had been worried about Steve. He was still trying to pretend everything was normal, even though things were far from it. Steve insisted on going out alone, despite his body being so much different from before, that he could still take care of himself. It almost seemed like he was itching for fights again and something to prove--to himself, to the world, that Steve Rogers was more than just Captain America.

The call of his name from the hallway outside his apartment gave him pause. He recognized Steve’s voice, though it was quiet, strained. In an instant, he was up and moving, opening his apartment door without hesitation and stepping outside to find Steve injured. Again. This time was worse, though, as the man barely seemed able to stand. “Steve--? What the hell did you do this time, c’mere, get in.”

Steve jerked away from the gentle hand before the sound of her voice even registered. Peggy. His eyes flew open, cuffed hands flexing as if to reach for her. “Peg.” His voice was rough from yelling. Hydra hadn’t exactly taken it easy on him in the last week, and though he hardly bruised for more than a day or so since the serum, his body was covered in dark marks, still unhealed cuts and dried blood. He was just lucky Peggy had beaten the Red Skull to him here. “Thank god. They - they asked me, I didn’t tell them anything,” he mumbled, still half delirious from exhaustion.

Peggy nearly cried out in relief when he opened his eyes and looked at her. She lets out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding when he says her name. They had no idea what kind of state they would find him in. Would he be dead? Or worse, brainwashed like they had done to Bucky? “Shh. It’s alright. I’m here now. We’re going to get you out of here.” She presses her forehead to his for a moment, before pulling back. She’d had to take out the three guards stationed at his door. She would have a nasty bruise on her side in the morning, but well worth it. She had no doubt they would soon realize their defense were down, and they would be coming for them. She unlocks the cuffs around his wrists, helping him lower his arms. Who know how long he’d been chained up like this. His body was battered and beaten, and it made her want to personally strangle every last one of them. “Come on, let’s get you up.”

Now, what was he missing? Chips, popcorn, gummy bears, pop, water, and pizza on it's way. Nodding to himself, Tony grabbed the ziplock bag with the half dozen pre-rolled joints he'd bought and went to the livingroom. Holding onto his bandaged ribs, Tony sat back to wait on the pizza or Steve to arrive. One was a definite arrival, but Steve was... Well, he wasn't entirely sure if Steve would accept the invitation for a few movies and a chance to just chill after all the bullshit from the week.

“I also got chocolate in case you changed your mind,” he offeres with a small smile. “But I’m pretty excited to eat it if you don’t want it.” Steve’s baseline knowledge about pregnancy was deeply limited before Nat had announced that she was expecting, but since she was one of his closest friends, he had figured he’d better bone up on his info so he could be helpful.

He settles beside her on the couch and pops his feet up. “I’m not making a whole person, it’s the least I can do,” he assures her. Super serum be damned, it was impressive as hell the things that women’s bodies were capable of doing.

Steve nods eagerly, letting her guide his hand to her belly where he can feel the baby kicking. As a younger man, he’d always imagined he’d have a family of his own. Now, though - well. He tries not to let it make him sad. He’ll be the most doting uncle any child has ever had. “I can’t wait to meet them.” A slightly mischievous smile curved his lips. “Did you hear Tony has money on it being a girl?”

“Go for it. I’m TRYING to keep my cravings from winning anyway.” Natasha chuckles softly, leaning her head back. She gives a soft sigh of discomfort--honestly, she thinks the kid is doing CARTWHEELS on her organs. But her smile remains all the same. Really, a few years ago and she wouldn’t have DREAMED this was possible. And yet here she was.

She gives a snort and leans her head against his shoulder, moving his hand along her abdomen. “No, but I also didn’t have to make my way through a damn near BLIZZARD just to get ice cream.” Not that she’d be able to at this point, she suspects.

“Mmm, you and me BOTH. Not that I haven’t LOVED this experience--” Even in its ups and DOWNS, she was ecstatic that she was able to do it. Through the nausea and the frequent bathroom trips and the TEMPORARY hiatus on working...it was something she was amazed she could do. Her musing is cut short and she rolls her eyes. “You all need to stop making BETS on my womb. I heard Clint calling it a BOY for a hundred EUROS of all things.”

Bucky stared at the letter in front of him. He knew that America would soon join the war and that there was a high chance that he would be drafted but he didnt expect this soon.

He didnt want to leave, he'd be leaving Steve, Rebecca. He could die, all for this War, he didn't want to be apart of.

He sighed and leaned back on the couch. He would be going off to training in a few weeks time and then a week after he would be going overseas.

How was he going to tell them... tell Steve that he was leaving?
