Did you know that our ocean and coasts provide a natural way of reducing the impact of greenhouse gases on our atmosphere, through sequestration (or taking in) of carbon? The desert #mangroves in this footage are extremely effective at atmospheric Carbon intake and sequester more carbon than most plant species on earth. #BlueCarbon is the term for carbon captured by the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems. Sea grasses, mangroves, and salt marshes along our coast "capture and hold" carbon, acting as a #carbonsink. Sadly, in the last 40 years, Mexico has lost 9% of its mangrove forest cover due to #deforestation from unsustainable coastal development, pollution, sedimentation and run-off. During our time in Mexico, we spent some time with local NGO @wildcoastcostasalvaje, who have partnered with Mexican Federal agencies to protect mangroves and other key marine areas. Their latest project seeks to protect a total of 71,374 acres of mangroves in the next four to five years in Northwest Mexico. To learn more about their research, check out their social pages and website. Do you have mangrove forests in your local area? If so, what is is being done to protect them? #ninthwaveglobal #scicomm (at Baja California, Mexico)
