Trying to explain to my employer that 4 miles may be 10 minutes by car but is an hour or more by bus truly makes me realize that carbrains have no idea how bus travel works.

These people are genuinely evil wtf!? 😭 I've seen far too many horror stories from ignorant or just downright malicious car drivers recently. This is what you call *car brain*. Now, I'm not one of those people who thinks all cars should be banned - I don't believe those people actually exist and are instead straw-manned into existence, but the amount of entitlement motorists have, at least in car dependent society is genuinely staggering.
Idiots are like “wHy doNt biKEs AnD KIcK ScoOtErs pAY rOad TAx If thEYRE oN tHe ROaD” because our vehicles don’t create potholes, damage curbs, crack roads going too fast over speed bumps or destroy lamp posts, that kind of damage would damage us if we don’t see it, don’t you go telling us we should pay road tax when you’re the kind of person to not know what indicators are when cutting us off, you damage it you pay for it simple as
I'm not saying you should kill someone with your car, but it's pretty clear that it's the easiest way in America to get away with killing someone. We are so insanely lenient on drivers just straight up killing people, it's nuts
itd be nice to have at least one aspect of society that didnt have to bow down to the automobile
people act like they would die if they had to walk 100m
fixing carbrain takes a long time. in Portland it's taken almost 50 years to finally bury parking minimums:
1975, we set a total parking maximum in downtown, "The Lid" is adjusted upwards periodically, while the min-max ranges on new development is periodically adjusted downwards1
1991, "Storefronts" and "Mixed Use" zones have parking minimums eliminated2
2002, parking minimums are eliminated within a 1/4 mile of transit corridors3
2013, in a spectacular NIMBY backslide, we reinstate parking minimums for apartments within transit corridors (but you can reduce this minimum by planting trees or bike staples)2
2015-2019, a bunch of other cities Just Say No to parking minimums
2021, "Single Dwelling" zones (the kind with big setbacks, classic American suburbia) have parking minimums eliminated3
2022, no more minimum parking near bus lines and street car lines3
2023, we finally eliminate minimums on everything that technically still had parking minimums: the wetlands, the West Hills, the airport, and bunch of other forgotten tracts of land3
Less roads, cars and car-brains could make it better for children to enjoy outside time. re: "The decline of American playtime — and how to resurrect it" /via https://www.vox.com/23759898/kids-children-parenting-play-anxiety-mental-health
