Before they were with Ardent, the band Cargoe recorded their tracks at Beautiful Records. However, a misaligned tapehead forced them to abandon the tapes and redo it with Terry Manning.

This version of Feel Alright was what was released, along with a non-album b-side “Wondering”.

Cargoe - Feel Alright (1972)

Originally from Tulsa, Cargoe moved to Memphis and signed to Ardent around the same time as Big Star. There is a similarity in sound on this song, but also that Cargoe sadly met the same fate as Big Star - Ardent couldn’t really promote them, and they fell apart.

The group Cargoe came from Oklahoma and migrated to Memphis Tennessee, ending up on the ill fated Ardent label. Like Big Star they suffered from the label’s poor distribution (which hindered their single “Feel Alright” from climbing further up the chart) and they broke up soon after. A pity since they’re now in Big Star’s shadow despite being a stunning group in their own rite, blending power pop, country rock and prog rock effortlessly into a lost gem of an album.
