first contact was the exact point where incipispherian history got exponentially more eventful. it resulted in discovery of more humanitarian FTL travel for the other sophonts, one of the queens being exiled thanks to several people, the other stepping down, the war ending, kingdoms somewhat splitting and causing an intense power struggle, massive amounts of carapacians spreading across the galaxy in very little time, cloning being fully banned in several of the new carapacian states, et cetera, et cetera. First contact was decades ago and the incipisphere is still a mess

The line between "country" and "company" are. Unfortunately blurred in cargostuck. Rose is legally a Skaianetian (Skaianet is called something different in CS since Skaia is a religious thing). The legislation in the galaxy is a little fucked up and most humans either live in one or two locations their whole life (not accounting for like, intra-planet travel), or live a kind of space nomad lifestyle.

"fun" facts about helming

Helming is the practice of connecting a psionic troll directly to a ship's nervous system via biowires. This causes permanent nerve damage to the troll, with helmsmen often going numb around connection ports, and are sometimes fully blinded. Ports are also installed for nutrition and sedative drips. Depending on the power rating, caste, and criminal record of the individual, a psionic may face mandatory imperial service for up to five sweeps, though psionic criminals are often sentenced to permanent helmsmanship.
