With the majority of the basics set up for this story done and the fluff out of the way, I really wanna get into the meat of the story so buckle up because we’re about to go on a fun day at the beach! Someone play Starships up in this bit-!

Title: The Jumbies  

Author: Tracey Baptiste

The Story: A supernatural adventure loosely based on the Haitian folktale The Magic Orange Tree. Corinne La Mer doesn’t believe in jumbies – they’re just stories meant for scaring children – but she also doesn’t trust Severine, the strange, beautiful woman who came from the forest and captivated everyone on the island. When Severine sets her sights on Corinne’s father, Corinne and her friends set out to save him from her clutches. As Severine’s powers threaten to transform the island forever, Corinne discovers that she has magic of her own, and if she wants to stop Severine, she’ll have to learn how to use it.

The Characters: Corinne is a smart, kind and determined heroine, and I really enjoyed following her journey and seeing her grow in power and understanding. I loved her friends – perceptive Malik, mischievous Bouki and cautious Dru, and I really enjoyed the relationship she developed with the island’s witch.

The Representation: The story takes place on a Caribbean island, and most characters are Afro-Caribbean. Dru and her family are Indo-Caribbean. Bouki and Malik are children without parents or guardians, who live on whatever they can find. Malik communicates mostly through gesture and facial expressions rather than verbally.

Why I Loved It: This was a fun, spooky adventure with a lot of heart and plenty to say. I loved all the subtle points it made about friendship, family, community, kindness and the importance of seeing from other perspectives, and I also loved the fast pace and exciting story, particularly the wonderful ending. The Caribbean setting really came to life, and I loved learning about the different types of jumbies. The sequel’s out next month, and I’m looking forward to it!
