And then they both turn to just stare at each other.

It reminds me so much of the moment from Natural Born Killer when both Hotch and Vincent Perotta turn back to look at each other.

Thinking about the first time that Reid clearly rejects a handshake is with detective Gordinski and yes we can all say it's because it's safer to kiss than shake hands but Reid always at least waves and smiles. But not with Gordinski. I think it's more about him not being willing to shake the hand of the detective who arrested his best friend for murders he didn't commit
