Sage monitored the entire situation even as Mayor Whiskers arrived to see what was happening. Clover did calm down and soon welcome two mini mayors into the world!
Atticus stepped back as he regained his bearings. He had never consumed plasma from another before, much less from a vampire. He hadn’t been prepared for how it felt. He wiped his mouth on the back of his hand and looked up to Caleb. He was rubbing his wrist and watching Atticus carefully.
“How do you feel?” he asked. Atticus rubbed his mouth again.
“That was the first time that I’ve consumed any amount of real plasma,” he said. “It was… intoxicating.”
“I know what you mean,” Caleb said. “That’s another reason that I abstain from it.” Suddenly Atticus doubled over in pain, grappling at his stomach desperately. Caleb stepped up and pulled his husband into his arms. “This will be painful to endure,” he told him. “I’m going to be with you every step of the way. I love you, Atticus Carpenter.”
The pain subsided eventually and Atticus wrapped his arms around around Caleb. “I’m prepared to endure it,” he said softly. “I love you, Caleb Vatore.”
Mayor Whiskers has grown older and has been hanging around the house more. He was finally coaxed into staying, which is good considering he’s going to be a father to Clover’s kittens.
There was no dancing around it or turning it into a grand affair. The cake was there and the candles were lit. It was now or never.
Antonia took her turn first to blow out the candles, more excited than she ever had been to celebrate her birthday. She failed to blow them all out the first time and blamed it on being too excited. Once they were all out she then took the honor of relighting them for her sister.
Sage was just as eager and missed the candles not once but twice! Antonia was there to cheer her sister on; The candles couldn’t avoid her for long! In this moment Sage felt a bit like they were kids again.
It was a nostalgic feeling that took her back to Cayla’s home and to their childhood home. They’d come so far in their lives, and they still had so far to go. This was really just the beginning.
With a grin, Sage huffed and blew the rest of the candles out. Thus, the door was opened. She could feel the torch pass from her dads to her and Antonia. It was a strange feeling, but an uplifting one.
And here, everyone, ends Generation Four and the Carpenter Legacy! Fear not, the Carpenter family is going nowhere! Sage’s story will be picking up tomorrow as the first generation of the Shameless Challenge!
Clover is (understandably) afraid of the shower.
There would never be a “right” time. One time would be no better than another. Tonight was as good as tomorrow, and that was that. He was going to ask Caleb tonight.
“Evening, Love,” Caleb greeted as Atticus walked into the bedroom. “Did you have a good workout?”
“Yes, it was fine,” Atticus replied. “I’m going to take a quick shower.” Caleb acknowledged as he continued his work. Atticus paused at the bathroom door and looked back his husband.
Yes, tonight.
“You had fun, then?”
“What makes you think that?”
“You’re glowing pink, Sagey...”
“Oh knock-it-all!”
“Better make that shower a cold one, eh?”
“Oh hush, you! I can’t help it when I’m with them, you know!”
“I know, but you could use a little restraint."
“As if you would if you had two Deacon’s...”
“Just hurry up...”
“Is that a flush I see?”
“Just scoot, you troublemaker!”
Atticus felt refreshed as he stepped out of the shower. He was more sure than before to do this now. After dressing himself for the night he drew Caleb’s attention away from his work. “Caleb? When you’re not busy... Let’s do this tonight.”
Caleb wasted no time closing the laptop and standing to face his husband. “I did say ‘when you’re not busy,’ did I not?” Atticus asked.
“I’m never busy for you,” Caleb said. “You’re sure you want to do this tonight, Atticus? You don’t want to wait a little longer? I won’t be offended if you are a little, or a lot, gray when-”
“Caleb...” Atticus shook his head and took his husband’s hand. “I’ve gone over this a hundred times in my head already. Tonight. Please.” Caleb sighed and nodded. Before he proceeded, though, he pulled Atticus into a passionate kiss. He’d never turned anyone before and though it was an innate ability he was still nervous. He swore to himself that he never would again. He would only turn for love, and by the Watcher he loved this man.
