I just finished rereading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, and I almost forgot how much I love that book. I also almost forgot what it feels like to a binge a really good book in two days and that weird bittersweet feeling you get when you’re done.
I also thought a lot more about Agatha this time than when I first read the book. I don’t think she ever really loved Simon, or even liked him in general, or Penny for that matter. I don’t think Simon was in love with her either. I think he cared about her and thought she was pretty, but their relationship was never going to last. They were both just kind of going through the motions. She was probably with him because she likes feeling wanted and her parents like him. He was probably with her, as Agatha mentioned, because he wanted someone to be his happy ending. It’s a good thing they didn’t get married and have kids, I don’t think either of them would be very happy, especially Agatha. I think she’ll probably be a lot happier in California having a normal college life and friends. And Simon has Penny and Baz to help him heal.
I always find it far more amusing than I should that she’s taking inspiration from Lucy, but it’s all based on things we all know she didn’t actually do. Agatha’s actually doing the opposite of Lucy.
Also Penny and Simon’s friendship is great.
Also I hope Simon gets rid of that fucking tail in the sequel.
