Cat Blankets
So I spent the last week doing what my Aunt calls “sweat shopping” a bunch of cat blankets. At the time of this writing I have cut out many 27x27″ pieces of cloth and have serged about half. The tools I used so far are a cutting mat, rotary cutter, fabric scissors, ruler, measuring tape (all pictured below), and a Juki serger (not pictured below).
My Aunt's friend takes care of cats and preps them for adoption. Said friends uses these 26x26″ blankets for the cages at the store and since my Aunt has the cloth (so much cloth it's ridiculous) and the machines to do so she has been making them for her. I usually do the cutting, while she does the sewing since cutting is harder on her hands, but since she does not like to appear on camera I did the serging as well.
Now at this point you may be wondering how I go from 27x27″ pieces of cloth to 26x26″ well that happens in the serging process as the machine cuts the cloth as it stiches them together. This insures that the cloth is the same size when it stiches it. I myself am a beginner in sewing and blankets, as well as pillow cases, are easy projects for starting out since it is all straight stiches. Currently the toughest project I’ve sewing myself is a Snuggie, which was only difficult because of the round arm hole.
The hardest part of this project (and part of why it took so long) was working around the cat, who thought he was ever so helpful testing out the fabric for comfort. It is very important to make sure any appendages, yours or feline, are not in the way when cutting or serging, as getting cut or stabbed is not fun (not that I’ve ever had it happen to me, but I have had my hand stapled and I image it is a similar feeling). The thing Autumn (my cat) really helped with is getting me to take breaks at regular intervals, as every couple hours he would sit or lay down on the cloth and refuse to be budged.
Last night, I curled up on my side under a mountain of blankets. I felt a cat nosing in behind me and sure enough, it was Vache sliding under the blankets and curling up against my back.
Two minutes later I heard a ‘Mew’ from Raleigh, which was always his way of saying ‘I want under the blankets Mom’. So I opened them up and in he crawled, curling up against my chest.
Lastly along comes Nadia, deciding she’s going to sleep on my hip.
My first drop off to an independent cat rescue!
These were the items dropped off to Millwood Cat Rescue i really fell in love with all the cats i saw and wanted to take them all away and Ronnie the owner was so lovely!
I am excited to make more as from out of no where a cat jumped up and tried to get in the bag of catnip fish!!
If you would like to help at all i do have a wishlist set up on Amazon and i would really be grateful of any help at all!
Thank you so much x
