🌾1/2 - hey! i hope everyone is doing good :) both my cats recently came down with cat flu (they’re mostly recovered and i promise im not asking for medical advice) i took them to their vets when they were beginning to show symptoms (both go to different clinics) and my concerns over them being sick were brushed off completely. they were vaccinated and the vets said there was nothing wrong with them.
🌾2/2 - a day later they were both coughing, snotty, having trouble breathing and clearly very very unwell. they were sick for about a week and a half. is this something i should mention to my vets or should i be changing vets altogether? thank you in advance!!!!

Others may want to chime in, but I rarely treat an uncomplicated upper respiratory infection (“cat flu”, or URI) with antibiotics or anything more than supportive care (yummy soft food, steam sessions in the bathroom). If it is a very sick kitten I will treat aggressively with antibiotics and antivirals, and if any cat has an eye ulcer, I will treat with eye drops. If the cat is having substantial difficulty breathing or just “looks terrible” I will treat. However, most cats have bouts of URI’s and get better on their own. They blow snot, have weepy eyes, and may have a little vomiting, but act normally otherwise. URI’s are normally caused by a virus which I can’t do much about. If two different vets said that the cats’ symptoms were mild enough that they didn’t think treatment was necessary, I would tend to believe them. You can always call your vet and tell them that your cats are getting worse and they will usually see them for a recheck which is often substantially less expensive than the original visit. You are welcome to contact your vet and ask about their policies regarding this sort of situation.
