The funniest thing that happened to me yesterday: I updated Trados and Trados informed me that it now recognises emojis. Over 3,500 of them. As a translator working in the legal sector this will make my work so much easier (not)!

A day in the life of translation, episode 13
Just interpreted into Japanese for an hour and then forgot how to say “You’re welcome,” (douitashimashite), so that’s how today is going.
(Since I’m working from home, now, though, I’ve been interpreting for meeting by chat, which is working out pretty nicely! The main presenters speak, and then I type what they say in Japanese into the chat for the Japanese participants [who don’t usually speak much] to keep them in the loop so they can jump in when they want/need to. I wonder if I can keep this up somehow even when in-person work restarts... I feel like I’m a lot better able to form full sentences in writing for some reason.)
(I finally found an app that allows me to take handwritten notes on my iPad that I can search later, too, so I want to try using that at work when we go back! There’s this one meeting that involves a lot of technical speak and happens way too fast for me to interpret everything, so I usually write down everything I hear and then type up a summary afterwards. People frequently bring up issues that were talked about previously, but in amongst all my scrawl, it takes me a lot of time to find where I had written it down. I’m hoping this will help!)
For this week’s edition of computer assisted translation fail we have:
“egocentrismos” translated to:
“dicks”
.. and in context it would have read “the human race with its selfishness and dicks…”
day in the life of translation, episode 4.5 - CAT tools
I’ve been translating two long interviews about a certain manga since February when a friend asked me to do it (sorry friend that I am so slow at long works). Since they were long, I decided to try using my free Computer-Aided Translation (CAT) software of choice, OmegaT. For the first interview, it was generally fine, but nothing special. I learned how to import a dictionary so I can check that instead of switching to my internet window dictionary all the time. BUT now that I’m doing the second interview, I’m using the Fuzzy Matches tool (in the blue box below), and it’s saving me the trouble of translating some of the segments, since they carry over from the first interview!! This is particularly helpful since I’ve dragged out this process so long that I can’t remember if I’ve translated a similar segment before or not. Yes! Good choices!
Oh, and I forgot, when I exported the first interview, it exported with the original formatting! Also a huge plus!!
My CAT software is very encouraging today. 😂
