Originally, this character was called a Bomb-bird. The name came from the fact that they would lay explosive eggs and toss them at enemies; the yellow tie around their neck actually being a bomb fuse in a knot. As a class, it was boring. As a generic character, it seemed a bit too unique. I know I wanted to keep them as a bird, but what would they use?

Plague Knight (Shovel Knight)
Bird mask, bird motifs, and he dealt with explosives! A fitting wardrobe to draw inspiration from.
But, the “explosives only” gimmick was still boring. What else would the class do?

Chemists (Final Fantasy Tactics)
One of my favorite classes in Final Fantasy Tactics. In a game where magic, sword skills, and breaking the opponent’s ribs with your fists run rampant, their special skill is...using Items.
And they’re one of the best classes in the game.
Items don’t cost mana to use, they always work, and Chemists can throw the Items for their teammate’s usage. Something so powerful all because they use Items very well.
In the game, you have to spend Job Points to enable the use of certain abilities, the Chemist in particular having to learn how to use Items instead. That stuck out to me. A potion is a potion, do you need to learn how to drink it?
But I realized that it all makes sense. Its a world of fantasy, brimming with all sorts of ailments and equipment that can cause or cure it. It would turn out that you don’t drink the potion; you apply it to your wound. Being handed a cure for petrification doesn’t mean you automatically know how to use it properly.
A Chemist would know that. A class defined by their intelligence of the setting rather than brute strength or magic spells. That is what I wanted to go for.
