The Crowing Crested Cobra or “Inkhomi” meaning “The Killer” is an alleged cryptid found in Africa. This creature is believed to be quite large and very vicious, measuring up to 20 feet long (around 6 meters). Reports of the creature go as far back as the early 1940′s when a Malawian witch doctor found skeletal pieces to a snake believed to be the crowing crested cobra due to the cockscomb found attacked to the partial skeleton. (the whereabouts of these remains are unknown)
Oddly enough the creature is said to leap from trees to attack its unsuspecting victims which of course reminds me a lot of the Drop Bear from Australia, thought it is believed to simply be a story to scare tourists. Witnesses claim the male cobra makes a crowing sound much like a rooster while the female makes a clucking sound like a hen. The appearance is what gives the Crowing Crested Cobra its name as they are believed to have combs and wattles much like a chicken.
Of course with such a bizarre creature there will always be a debate as to what the creature really is. Some say the combs and wattles are actually feathers, resembling the feathered serpent of Mesoamerican folklore. Others who have taken a more scientific approach say the creature is nothing more than a standard Black Mamba whose molted skin may be mistaken for a comb or a feather like appearance.
The Crowing Crested Cobra is surely a strange creature and has a very interesting appearance. If the remains found in the early 40′s were ever relocated it could shed some light on this story and give us some answers. As for now of course we continue down our path, recording stories and eye witness accounts keeping an eye out for the mysterious. They say if you hear hoof-beats think of horses not zebras but in this case if you hear a rooster, you’d probably be better off thinking of deadly cobras!
From ancient cave paintings to modern day footage captured all across the globe, the “Bigfoot’s” of the world have been a source of skepticism, debate, folklore, and a breath of life in the world of Cryptozoology for thousands of years. Though the term itself (Cryptozoology) had only been coined in the mid 1900′s, stories of strange creatures, impossible monsters and fearsome beasts have been handed down from generation to generation for as long as history itself has survived.
One of the most famous and more popular cryptids around the globe has many names, but the Yeti, Bigfoot, Sasquatch and Yeren (the list goes on) all share similar traits which could paint the picture of a possible species/sub species that may or may not roam the wild yet untouched by human civilization.
Bigfoot as it is most commonly known or “Wild-Man” if you were describing it to a local is a hairy bipedal hominid that, both short and tall, roam the wilderness’ across the globe. Each profile of this creature paints a different picture whether it be height, hair color, foot size or even diet. Bigfoot and its equals could be the remnant of a species lost many years ago.
Continental divide, loss of habitat, or just simply father time could have separated and changed these creatures which they would have had to do, to survive. Unfortunately we have yet to discover an intact skeleton or even a living specimen to determine its history on this earth. On the latter we do have a bit of fortune on our side, the human brain.
Thanks to years of technological advances and a bit of luck on the side of mother nature we’ve been able to create many technologies and gadgets that could help further and better the search for Bigfoot or any cryptid for that matter. Of course the most important piece to this puzzle is us, humans. Those eager and adventurous enough to trek the unforgiving wilderness in search for these creatures is what keeps Cryptozoology alive.
Many would say the Bigfoot is scientifically possible but not plausible, given the little evidence we truly have it is only fair to agree. Of course that doesn't mean you must be completely swayed. It is important to stay open minded, grounded and reasonable when discussing the existence of an animal. We must let it exist for it to be found, and maybe one day one such discovery will happen.
With all of the age old stories, literature, and art depicting Bigfoot and its brothers and sisters around the world it is fair to say this creature has a long history and a big story behind it. Hopefully one day we may unravel that story and bring to light the many answers we seek. Of course all of this starts with one step, one big step that is.
The Ahool is a cryptid that reportedly lives in the Java Rainforest in Indonesia. It’s name was given to it because of the sound it makes (Ah-hool!). This creature was first reported in 1925 and has since been considered a cryptid though no substantial evidence has ever been found to support the claims.
The descriptions of the creature vary from a large bat to a monkey with wings. It is however usually described as a large bat or owl with dark eyes and a tremendous wingspan of 3m (10 feet). It is said to have greyish fur, large claws that run down the wings and a loud scream which it was named after.
The Ahool very closely resembles that of the Javan Wood Owl (Brown Wood Owl) and is said to be the most logical explanation of the creature though the Ahool itself is reportedly much larger.
One can only assume it would be tough to traverse the thick rain forests of Indonesia, and even tougher to locate and document such a bizarre creature. It may be possible that this is the reason no solid evidence has ever surfaced, though a likely misidentification could also be the reason. Hopefully one day we will find credible evidence towards the creatures existence or at least learn the truth behind its mysterious lore.
The Megaconda or “Giant Anaconda” is a reptile believed to exist in many parts of the world. As most of the largest anacondas reach lengths anywhere from twenty five to thirty five feet, the giant anaconda or famously “Megaconda” is believed to reach lengths of 50-60 feet. These creatures have been spotted in South America, North America and Africa.
The Giant Anaconda appears, by reports standards, to look identical to other Anacondas and only differs in size. A Report in 1907 tells the tale of a 62 ft (19 meter) anaconda that was shot and killed in the Amazon by European explorers. Though many suggest the accepted length of an Anaconda reaches no more than 37 ft (11 meters), there have been many reports of 50+ foot long serpents across the globe.
Many snakes, Anaconda and Python alike, don't usually grow to these exponential lengths but given the right circumstances i.e plentiful food, little to no predators and a large enough area to grow, it could be possible for a snake to grow to such extreme lengths. It is possible that in these very dense jungles and thick habitable areas that giant snakes do exists, though a 50+ foot snake body has never been documented properly.
Giant river and sea serpents seem to be in tales hundreds of years old and have given people a strong belief in the possibility of such amazing creatures. Hopefully one day, with the help of dedicated explorers and advanced technology, we will be able to find and document such an amazing creature for all to see. Just remember to watch where you walk or you may end up being dinner for the Megaconda!
The Wendigo or “Windigo” is a mythical creature that resides in the United States and Canada and is part of a traditional belief system in these areas. The name roughly means “The evil spirit that devours mankind” and usually translates to the word “Cannibal” in many tribes. This of course gives credence to the term “Wendigo Psychosis” which is a syndrome causing a craving for human flesh and is a term heavily tied to the creature.
There are many different descriptions of the creature and many beliefs as well as to what it is exactly. Many describe the Wendigo as a monster, a gaunt twisted being who’s insatiable greed and hatred has led them astray. They are commonly associated with greed, racism, gluttony and are seen as evil, malevolent beings wandering around constantly looking for new victims.
Some believe the Wendigo to be a spirit, a supernatural being which can posses a person, which could explain the greed and hatred of humans. Some people however did and still do fear the creature and believe it exists. Those who do believe, say it lives and hunts in the Great Lakes region. This fear of the creature has even lead to real Wendigo hunts, hoping to kill the creatures and remove them from the area.
It is believed that a human who cannibalizes will become a Wendigo. It is also believed that one who is bitten or possessed by a Wendigo may also cause you to turn into one. Even something as simple as dreaming about one could cause a transformation. It is often debated as to whether the Wendigo is a metaphor for the greed and destruction of humans or a real creature who’s Psychosis has turned them into a savage beast.
The history of the Wendigo is hundreds of years old and is rich in tales all over northern America and Canada. Though it is not often seen as a cryptid it has made its way into the community and has given us another topic to talk about. Most cryptids would be amazing to see in real life but the Wendigo, that is one creature you should think twice about looking for.
The Fur-Bearing Trout or “Hairy/Shaggy” trout is a fish that supposedly dwells in the waters of North America and Iceland. It gets its name from the thick fur that reportedly grows on its body. It is believed to have grown this hair due to the frigid waters it lives in. Many suggest the fish to be nothing more than folklore but some do believe in its existence.
The Fur-Bearing Trout has been reported as far back as the late 1800′s in Iceland, being called an inedible and poisonous fish. There are many accounts of the Hairy Trout in North America as well, reports say the fish would lose its hair when pulled from the water and that possibly grew the hair due to a spillage of hair tonic in the water. Many of these stories of course are tall tales though some stories are reportedly based on real encounters.
If the Hairy Trout is real and does exist, it could be a few things that are causing the hair growth. Many believe the hair like appearance could be a mold (Saprolegnia) or “Cotton Mold” that infects the fish. Some however believe the hair could be real as there are a few fish that do grow hair. Fish like the Mirapinna Esau (hairy fish) can grow hair, or the Piraiba (Lau Lau) also is believed to grow thick black hair in its later years.
Though the possibility of the fish existing is not farfetched, there has been no substantial evidence other than word of mouth that the fish exists. A popular taxidermy may have given popularity to the fish, but the legend of the Fur-Bearing Trout is keeping its memory alive.
