A Hindsight Review

Genre: Action/Suspense

Who Directed It: David R Ellis

Plot:  A young man receives an emergency phone call on his cell phone from an older woman. The catch? The woman claims to have been kidnapped; and the kidnappers have targeted her husband and child next.

Running Time: 94 Minutes 

IMDB Score: 6.5

Metascore: 60

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics 55%  Audience 59%

Why I saw watched it: Solid trailer and liked the premise and even back then that was a good cast.

Why I Rewatched it: It see if it held up and it had been awhile since I saw it and my oldest daughter wanted to see it, she’s a big Chris Evans fan.

Where I Watched It: Amazon Prime Canada

Random Thoughts: For whatever reason I’ve seen a few of director’s David R Ellis’ films lately and I will say he was a very good genre director and knew how to have fun with his material.

Hard to believe this film came out over 15 years ago, this was Chris Evans first real lead and yup you could tell he had “it”

Larry Cohen has a story credit on this and it shows, he was a great genre director/writer.  Cohen had a few really good one line movies, meaning he could pitch the film with just a line or two.  

What I Liked: I just had fun with this film, great set and the smart thing they did was once the plot kicked in the film never stopped and they were very smart to keep this at around 90 minutes and not bog it down too much.

Th cast was so good for this kind of movie, two big shout outs, one to Kim Basinger who is unsung here cause she has to sell the whole thing here, if we don’t buy her plight we don’t buy the movie and the second one goes to Bill Macy who pretty well steals the movie as a cop one step behind everything but figures things out.  Chris Evans is good here and young but you could tell he was a star because not only did he have charisma he also could act.

It’s funny seeing Jason Statham as a bad guy, he’s decent here, not in it that much. He’s a good bad guy he should do it more.  Also he doesn’t do any big fights.

This film is a lot of fun and we get some twists and turns in it as well.  The action and pacing is very good here, even if stuff doesn’t make sense the film doesn’t slow down long enough for it to get in the way of the fun.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s slight, and it might not stay with you.  It’s slick and disposable, for me the kind way to put it, it’s a popcorn movie.  Other than that it’s a movie that does what it does pretty well.

Final Thoughts: A fun watch
