Acting like New Jersey has the sole claim on diners would be ridiculous. There's diners everywhere. But being from California? Definitely made my relationship with diners different.
The thing is, out there, there aren't a lot of local diners. Going to a diner means IHOP or Denny's usually, if you're lucky an Original Mel's. But the idea of most towns having a local diner with about 800 pages? Knowing a whole page will inexplicably be Greek food? Being tempted into seafood you probably can't trust? Having to bounce from place to place learning which one is best? And then creating a spiritual relationship with that diner? Totally foreign to me before moving out east.
It brings me to the concept of a Third Place. Of us as humans needing more than home and work/school as safe spaces to inhabit. Unfortunately they all cost fucking money, but diners have overall stayed pretty cheap. They at least give you a big ass pile of food for your sacrifice.
Sitting down in your favorite greasy spoon, with a waiter you've seen a dozen times before, with that classic unlimited diner coffee, choosing if you're having breakfast or dinner cuz it serves both all day... it's not just a meal. It's a part of the culture.
Plus, California didn't have disco fries.
Wanna read about a Jersey transplant meeting disco fries for the first time, along with dealing with love, hate, trauma, healing, and sometimes cryptids?

I haven't been to Cheesequake in a good 2 or 3 years, Still the park with the most well marked trails I ever seen! My sister and my mom joined me for this one.
No one is from New Jersey.
I love new jersey stereotypes so much. As someone from south-central jersey, the most common stereotype is of people from north jersey and the shore areas. Most of us down here have phili accents. Lastly, central jersey is real and its porkroll not taylor ham.
