Van cactushout kunnen ook (gebruik-)voorwerpen gemaakt worden. De reeds omgehakte zuilcactus is het eenvoudigst om te bewerken. Zeker als het ‘vlees’ ervan reeds verteerd is en alleen de harde (bruikbare) kern overblijft.

Op Bonaire kom je 2 type zuilcactus tegen. ‘De meest voorkomende cactus op Bonaire is de kadushi (Cereus repandus). Deze zuilcactus kan maar liefst 18 meter hoog worden en wordt door de lokale bevolking voor diverse doeleinden ingezet. Enerzijds worden er van de plant culinaire hoogstandjes gefabriceerd in de Bonairiaanse keuken zoals kadushi-soep en kadushi-likeur, anderzijds kunnen er van de kadushi-cactus muziekinstrumenten gemaakt worden.  Een andere zuilcactus die massaal voorkomt op Bonaire is de yatu (Lemaireocereus marginatus). De yatu-cactus wordt veel gebruikt als efficiënte natuurlijke erfafrastering.’

Cereus Repandus (Monstrosus)

Common Name: Peruvian Apple Cactus

Origin: South America and Dutch Carribean

Identification: The Cereus repandus is a large thorny columnar cactus from the family Cactaceae. In its natural environment, it can grow up 10 metres in height and 20 cm in diameter. The monstrosus variety grows to around 5 metres in the wild and has many round offshoots. It produces white nocturnal flowers and can also produce small fruits.

Information: The Cereus repandus is also known as the Cereus peruvianus. In its natural habitat, it is popular for its fruits called pitaya, or Peruvian Apples. The reason why the cactus flowers nocturnally is because it is pollinated by bats. The C. repandus and C. repandus monstrosus are both very attractive cacti that are easy to take care of.

Growing Tips: The cactus grows very rapidly when cared for well. In a pot it can be kept to the size of preference. It enjoys indoor temperatures and full sun to partial sun. During the winter, it can tolerate watering only once a month. During other seasons it should be watered about once a week, or when the soil is dry. Make sure the soil is well-draining and prevent over-watering. The soil should preferably contain sand.
