みなさんお久しぶりです〜。昨年の6月までCGNでインターンをしていたKurumiです。
気がつけばCGNでのインターン開始から1年も経っており、あまりの時の速さに驚いています。インターンを終えてから半年も過ぎてしまいましたが、CGNでの活動を経て私が何を学んだのか、帰国後の活動を紹介しながらお伝えできればと思います。

CGNで活動した半年間は、がむしゃらに知識を吸収する毎日でした。コーヒーの知識も全くない状態でスタートした私は、スタッフのリリーやマイラに「今のどういうこと？」と聞きまくる日々。大学でタガログ語を専攻している私ですが、先住民が暮らすコーディリエラ地方では、ルソン島北部の共通語であるイロカノ語の方がタガログ語よりも優先度が高く、半年間マニラの大学でタガログ語を学んでいた私は、日常会話では使わないような（硬い）単語を使ってスタッフにドン引きされたことも多々あります（笑）。フィールドで体調を崩して迷惑をかけてしまったこともありました。それでも、いつも新たなことを教えてくれたスタッフには感謝しきれません。
この半年間で、幸運にも多くのプロジェクトに携わらせていただきました。NPO法人バードリサーチとの共同プロジェクトや明治学院大学のスタディツアー、愛・地球博20周年祭の環境演劇プロジェクトなど、以前ブログで取り上げたこと以外にも、日々の活動でシサムコラムを書かせていただいたり、コーヒーの収穫や集荷に同行したり、朝から晩までオフィスでコーヒー豆の選別をしたり……。今となっては、そのすべてが貴重な体験でした。 活動の中で、CGNがどのように農家の人たちをサポートしているのか、農家の方々がどれほど大切にコーヒーを育てているのかを知ると同時に、品質管理や気候変動、コミュニティ・エンパワーメントの難しさといった課題も学びました。特に「環境と経済をどう両立させるか」という問いは、今もなお考え続けています。

このように、半年間のインターン生活はとても濃く充実したものでした。そこで、私が学んできたことの面白さを伝えたいと思い、ある企画を考えました。 それが、自分の大学の学園祭への出店です。偶然、同時期にフィリピン南部のミンダナオ島でコーヒープロジェクトを行うPMCEIでインターンをしていた同期がいたこともあり、「フィリピンコーヒー研究会」を発足。それぞれの産地で育てられたコーヒーを提供することにしました。当日はコーディリエラの伝統工芸品も販売し、みなさんに魅力をたくさん伝えることができました＾＾
5日間の開催で、なんと920杯ものコーヒーを販売しました！！（予定数の500杯を遥かに上回り、自分たちもびっくり！） 日本ではまだ知名度が低いフィリピンコーヒーの魅力を、来場者の方に伝えることができて大満足です！今年の学園祭でも出店しようと思っているので、ぜひみなさん足を運んでくださいね。
また、東南アジア学会でライトニングトークとポスター発表をさせていただく機会もあり、コーディリエラのタジャン町とインドネシアのKlasik Beansのコーヒー農家による交流プロジェクトから学んだことを、研究テーマとして発表しました。
現在は絶賛就活中で、半ば強制的ながらも（笑）自分の人生と向き合っています。振り返ると、CGNでの日々は私の人生において本当にかけがえのない時間でした。 こんな充実した日々を過ごせたのは、時には厳しく一から教えてくださったまりこさん、そしてCGNのスタッフみんなのおかげです。日本での生活がベースになっていたまりこさんとは、インターン中メッセージでのやり取りがほとんどだったのですが、常に私の考えの浅さと計画性のなさを見抜かれ、メッセンジャー越しにドキッとしていました＾＾。常々言われていたのは、「誰が何のためにどう動いているか考える」ということ。自分の役割で精一杯になりがちだった私は、いかに全体の動きを俯瞰して見ることが大切かを学びました。これはどんな役割、どんなプロジェクトでも共通することだと思います。本当に、この半年間で鍛えられました。
現地スタッフのリリーには、コーヒーそのものについての知識を徹底的に教えてもらいました。特に終盤は、私が淹れたコーヒーを毎日リリーに試飲してもらい、「Ay pait!!（あー苦い！！）」と何度もダメ出しをもらいながら、技術も味覚も磨いていきました。
また、フォレスターのマイラには現地生活で一番お世話になりました。山道で酔ったり山の斜面で滑ったりするくせにとりあえず何でもやりたがる私に、マイラは毎回「あー、もう見てられない！」といった視線を向けながらも、コーヒーノキの生育状況や選別の仕方などを事細かに教えてくれました。本当にありがとう（ ; ; ）。
そのほかにも、グラディースやライネルをはじめとしたスタッフ、環境教育プロジェクトで関わったメンバーたちなど、本当にたくさんの人にお世話になりました。改めてCGNでインターンすることができて良かったと思います！！
これからもコーヒー、フィリピン、そしてコーディリエラに関わり続けたいと思っています。 まずは就活を早く終わらせて、またコーディリエラのみんなに会いに行きます！！
Reflecting on My Internship with CGN
Hi everyone! It’s been a while. I’m Kurumi, and I was an intern at CGN until June of last year.
I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I started my internship—time really flies! Even though six months have passed since I finished the program, I’d like to share what I learned through my activities with CGN and what I’ve been up to since returning to Japan.

The six months I spent with CGN were a whirlwind of learning. Starting with zero knowledge of coffee, I spent my days constantly asking staff members like ma’am Lily and ate Mhyra, “Wait, what does that mean?” Even though I major in Tagalog at my university, in the Cordillera region—home to many Indigenous peoples—Ilocano (the lingua franca of Northern Luzon) is more common. Having studied Tagalog in UP for six months, I often used overly formal words that nobody uses in daily conversation, which left the staff looking a bit confused or even slightly weirded out (lol). I even got sick in the field and caused some trouble for everyone. Still, I can’t thank the staff enough for always being there to teach me something new.
During those six months, I was lucky enough to be involved in many projects: a joint project with the NPO Bird Research, a study tour with Meiji Gakuin University, and an environmental theater project for the Aichi Expo 20th Anniversary. Beyond what I’ve written in previous blogs, I also wrote columns for Sisam, joined coffee harvesting and collection trips, and spent entire days sorting coffee beans in the office. Looking back, every single moment was a precious experience. I learned how CGN supports farmers and how much love and care the farmers put into growing their coffee. At the same time, I faced the realities of quality control, climate change, and the challenges of community empowerment. The question of "how to balance the environment with the economy" is something I am still thinking about today.

My internship was incredibly intense and fulfilling. To share the excitement of what I learned, I came up with a special project: opening a coffee stall at my university festival. It just so happened that one of my classmates was interning at PMCEI, a coffee project in Mindanao (Southern Philippines), at the same time. We decided to form the "Philippine Coffee Research Club" to serve coffee from our respective regions. We also sold traditional handicrafts from the Cordilleras and shared the Philippines’s charm with many people.
We ended up selling 920 cups of coffee over five days!! (We were surprised since we only expected to sell 500!) It was so rewarding to share the appeal of the Philippine coffee, which isn't very well-known in Japan yet. We’re planning to open a stall again at this year’s festival, so please come by!
I also had the opportunity to give a lightning talk and a poster presentation at the Japan Society for Southeast Asian Studies. I presented my research on what I learned from the exchange project between coffee farmers in Tadian (Cordillera) and Klasik Beans (Indonesia).
Right now, I’m in the middle of job hunting. It’s a bit of a "forced" opportunity to reflect on my life (lol), but looking back, my time at CGN was truly an irreplaceable period. I was able to have such a fulfilling experience thanks to Mariko-san, who was sometimes tough but taught me everything from scratch, and all the CGN staff. Mariko-san was mostly based in Japan during my internship, so we communicated mainly via message. She always saw right through my shallow thinking and lack of planning—I’d often get a little nervous seeing her notifications pop up! One thing she always told me was: "Think about who is moving, for what purpose, and how." I used to get overwhelmed just focusing on my own role, but I learned the importance of looking at the big picture. I believe this applies to any role or any project. Those six months really toughened me up.
Ma’am Lily taught me everything there is to know about coffee itself. Toward the end, I would brew coffee for her every day to have her taste it. She’d often give me blunt feedback like, "Ay pait!!" (Oh, it's bitter!!), but through those critiques, both my brewing skills and my palate improved.
Ate Mhyra, our forester, took the most care of me during my life in the field. Even though I’d get car sick on mountain roads or slip on steep slopes, I always wanted to try everything myself. Ate Mhyra would give me that "I can't watch this!" look, but she still patiently taught me everything about coffee tree growth and how to sort beans. Thank you so much, Mayra ( ; ; ).
I also want to thank Ate Gladys, Kuya Rainel, the members of the environmental education project, and so many others. I am truly glad I chose to intern at CGN!!
I wanna stay involved with coffee, the Philippines, and the Cordillera region for a long time to come. First, I’ll get this job hunting over with so I can go back and see everyone in the Cordillera again!!
