Hi! In chapter 469 of the official translation, Chopper told Hogback that his captain can get monsters, cyborgs, beasts, perverts and extremely pessimistic people to work under him. However, the term beast was changed to demon in some fan translations and to moss head in the anime dialogue. I was wondering what is the closest translation for the term used for beast?

aha! yes, i see what happened here. this word is 魔獣/majuu. it's not a particularly common word, i don't think. it's like 'magical/legendary beast', but with connotations of evil/demons/witchcraft. 魔/ma is like demon/evil magic, while 獣/juu is beast. "demonic beasts" or "demonic creatures" might be decent translations?

Franky likes to call Sanji ぐるぐるコック/guru-guru kokku. Kokku is just ‘cook’ loaned into Japanese but guru-guru is the ontomopoeia for ‘turning round and round/spinning in circles.’

I like to think it’s a joke both about the spinny shit he does with his kicks, and about his eyebrows.

Hogback says a whole lot of vile stuff to Cindry as he’s howling at her to rescue him, including 貴様/kisama and バカ野郎/bakayarou, but the one that stands out the most to me isn’t actually a swear word at all. It’s ポンコツ/ponkotsu.

Ponkotsu means a ‘piece of junk,’ especially a broken-down or dismantled car, or otherwise worn out item. It’s a word for things. So it’s fitting that ポンコツ死体/ponkotsu shitai (‘broken down/piece of junk dead body’) is the very last thing he calls her before she proves her humanity, and lets him get crushed.
