As cheesy and naive as this seemed at first, he turned out to be right! 

Natsu believed in a part of Laxus that even Laxus didn’t believe in. In fact, I’d say Freed also believed in that until he couldn’t anymore. 

Makarov's lack of faith in Laxus is warranted, but this was one of the deeper rifts of the Dreyar family. Makarov’s flaws as a parent brought forth Ivan, who brought forth Laxus. Makarov might have continued to believe in any other of his children, but not is own grandson, because Makarov’s truly given up on Ivan, and he’s currently on the fence with Laxus. 

This arc was an exploration of the Dreyar family dynamics, and Makarov’s personal flaws, even as the ‘perfect Gramps’ that everyone in the guild loves.
