Usopp pivoting from a gadget guy to being more of a plant guy seems kind of strange, but Databook Green revealed that Oda originally conceptualized the Straw Hats having a botanist.

making it seem like he was trying to find use for ideas he'd had for a long time. I'm pretty ambivalent on the change mostly, but I personally think it would have worked better if Oda had mixed the gadget stuff and plant stuff more post time skip. It would have made it a little more cohesive.
