It has been brought to my attention that Akainu did in fact decide to spare a "friend" (Aokiji) when they fought on Punk Hazard..
he decided not to go through with it. Nobody pressured him to finish it; there wasn't an Elder or a Celestial on his ass about finishing Kuzan off.
He was blessed with the opportunity to not have to deal with the grief and guilt of killing someone he deemed close to him, but you know WHO DIDN'T GET THAT FUCKING OPTION?
