In your orbit

synopsis: you're used to just being on the sidelines, and going unnoticed by everyone, you're pretty content about it but a certain boy decides to rock your world somewhat upside down, and it's not who you expected.
You were just a normal person. A normal human being who never expected to get tangled up in the whole superheroes-versus-villains world, that stuff just wasn’t for you.
You went to school, studied, stressed over grades like it’s the end all or be all, and recently started applying to colleges. Honestly, you never really cared much about the superhero life anyway… ok sure, maybe you knew a bit more than the average person, but most days you were just sitting on the couch in the living room while your mom cooked dinner, absentmindedly flipping through TV channels until the screen landed on another news report of some superhero beating the hell out of a villain or saving civilians from another disaster.
You were just someone watching it all happen from the sidelines.
Maybe other people thought that was boring because wouldn’t most people want powers of their own? And yeah, superpowers did seem cool in theory, but you personally maybe wanted no part in it.
Exhibit a: Mark Sebastian Grayson.
One of your best friends, whom you met in a pre-calculus class, you had no idea how functions worked or how any of that math gibberish like polynomials or logs even worked…neither did he, apparently math wasn’t his strong suit either, so you both just sat next to each other and suffered through it together, him doodling stuff on his notebook with you leaning back in your chair listening to music while your teacher would ramble on and on about the mechanics of pre calculus and yadada… also you had absolutely no idea he was Invincible until one day you stopped by Burger Mart, where he worked part-time, and caught him half-dressed behind the dumpster outside, midway through pulling on his suit.
The way he just froze and stared at you, completely dumbfounded-
Honestly, it was still one of the funniest moments of your life,
And weirdly enough, it ended up making your friendship even stronger after that.
Now, you walked down a cobblestone path through the park, the cloudy evening sky painted in purples and fading orange. The air had that sharp chill that came right before nightfall, cold enough to sting your fingertips but still refreshing, mixed faintly with the scent of the city drifting on the breeze.
You were supposed to meet Mark here because apparently, he needed to tell you something important.
Except he was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago…and it was already 5:18 PM.
You huffed in annoyance, pulling your phone from your back jeans pocket. Your thumb unlocked it with muscle memory before you opened your messages app, fingers moving quickly despite the cold numbing them slightly.
You: dude where are you??? didn’t you need to tell me something?? i’ve been waiting in the park for like 20 minutes 😭 {image}
You stood there with one hand planted on your hip, brow raised as you waited for the typing bubbles to appear, you tried giving Mark the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he’d answer immediately. Maybe he was busy.
Or maybe more realistically-he’d leave you on read and reply two hours later, not that you could fully blame him. Between Burger Mart and his other side hustle of getting beaten halfway to death while saving the planet, his schedule was probably insane.
Miraculously, though, your phone buzzed almost instantly.
The messages lighting up your screen made you smirk and facepalm at the same time.
Mark: UHHHHH I LOWKEY FORGOT MY BAD
Mark: I’M SO SORRY MAYBE RAINCHECK??? Because I’m gonna meet up with Eve like right now…
That was so last minute…
You: so you finally asked Eve out? did you grow balls??
Mark: I’m working on that :/ but basically I’m meeting up with her on the Golden Gate Bridge and I’m gonna tell her how I feel. it’s just been on my mind since, y’know, the whole alternate Eve thing telling me she liked me forever?
You: bro i would literally be hating on you rn because you texted me HOURS ago saying you needed to tell me something and THEN proceeded to bail last minute 😭 i’m in the park freezing my ass off however… i’m proud of you mark go get that
Mark: I WILL MAKE IT UP TO YOU I SWEARRR maybe get u chipotle or something
You: yeah yeah
Mark: okay ttyl she’s on her way now
You: 😒😒
You sighed, shoving your phone back into your pocket, well you were happy for Mark honestly, you always kind of shipped Eve and Mark together, plus it was so obvious from the start that Eve literally kinda had a thing for him maybe. But besides that with Mark going on his own romance side quest-
Maybe you’d just enjoy the fresh air for a bit before heading home. The park was peaceful enough, flowerbeds lined neatly along the paths with freshly planted hydrangeas swaying lightly in the breeze.
Then-
“You’re gonna get wrinkles if you keep doin’ that.”
A familiar voice, smooth, teasing, slightly arrogant in a way only he could pull off and you turned immediately.
And there he was, not in his suit, surprisingly.
His auburn hair looked softer than usual, fluffy and loose instead of tied back in a usual bun. Apparently he’d gotten a haircut maybe? he wore a casual graphic T-shirt along with a zipped opened hoodie with baggy jeans, both hands shoved into his pockets as he stared at you with that same unreadable expression.
Your eyes narrowed almost immediately, suspicion written all over your face, and Rex raised a brow at the look you were giving him.
“Am I hallucinating,” you asked slowly, “or is the ground about to open up and swallow me whole right now?”
Rex blinked. “What the hell does that mean?”
You stared at him for another second before looking away with a quiet scoff. “I feel like I’m in a dream or something, because there’s no way a guy like you is talking to me right now. Did somebody leak my location to you? Maybe Cecil’s secretly stalking me through traffic cameras or-”
You cut yourself off, rubbing your face… because seriously, this was Rex Splode, standing in front of you out all of people and not on TV. Not fighting some monster in downtown Chicago. Not getting thrown through a building on the news which you’d usually see happen.
No he’s actually standing here. In a park, and of all people, he was talking to you.
“Well, sweetheart,” Rex said, lips twitching upward, “thanks for callin’ me a dream. Wish I was somethin’ conjured up specifically for you, but I’m really just here chillin’ at the park like a normal guy-”
“Ew,” you interrupted immediately, recoiling dramatically. “Do not call me sweetheart. That’s disgusting.” which make Rex barked out a laugh.
“Oh, c’mon, it wasn’t that bad.”
“It was actually awful.”
“You wound me.”
You crossed your arms and turned away with a huff, but out of the corner of your eye, you caught the stupid grin still sitting on his face and annoyingly enough, it looked good on him.
Which honestly felt like a personal attack.
The evening air drifted cold around the two of you, rustling through the trees overhead. The park lamps had started flickering on one by one, soft golden lights illuminating the cobblestone path beneath your feet. Somewhere nearby, you could hear distant traffic humming from the city streets, mixed with the occasional bark of a dog or muffled laughter from people farther down the park…
It all felt strangely… calm.
“So,” Rex said casually as he fell into step beside you, “any reason you’re wandering around lookin’ like somebody just told you your dog exploded?”
You glanced at him, since that came out of nowhere, is Rex usually that out of pocket guy…? “That was a terrible analogy.”
“I’m workshopping.” Rex rose his hands as if maybe to put more validity at his point he was trying to convey.
“Well maybe,” you replied dryly, “I’m at the park because, like you apparently, I’m just chilling here like a normal person.”
Rex pressed a hand dramatically to his chest. “Using my own words against me? Brutal.”
You fought the urge to smile at that, barely, then maybe the unwanted words from a maybe petty place creeped out of your throat, which you probably couldn’t have taken back.
“And maybe,” you added after a moment, your tone sharpening slightly, “I just don’t really wanna tell my business to a guy like you.”
That made him pause, and you saw it, his grin faltered-not completely, but enough.
“Well damn,” he muttered. “Who pissed in your Cheerios?”
The two of you stopped walking, the wind swept through the trees again, carrying the scent of damp grass and the distant smell of fresh food from some restaurant a few blocks away.
You looked at him properly this time, without the constant movement and cocky one-liners, it was easier to notice things about him. The faint shadows under his eyes. The small scar near his jawline. The exhaustion buried underneath the arrogance.
Still, you crossed your arms tighter.
“Well, sorry if I’m not exactly thrilled to meet the guy who cheated on Eve with, what, five different versions of the same girl?”
Rex groaned instantly, dragging both hands down his face.
“Oh my god.”
“What?”
“No, nothing, that’s just…” he pointed at you vaguely, “-such a brutal way to phrase that.”
“Was I wrong?”
“…No,” he admitted miserably.
You snorted at that, Rex let out a long sigh before shoving his hands into his pockets again. “Look, I get it, alright? I was an asshole.”
“Was?” your eyes widened slightly, as you grinned in disbelief.
“Okay, rude.”
“You set yourself up for that.”
“Fair enough.”
A small laugh escaped you before you could stop it, and Rex immediately pointed at you in victory.
“Aha! There it is.”
“What?”
“The laugh. I knew you weren’t completely mean.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, explosion boy.”
Rex grinned again, but it softened after a moment, the silence was going to creep in again, but he finally spoke.
“I really did hurt Eve,” he admitted quietly. “And I know people don’t exactly forget that kinda thing.”
His voice lacked its usual teasing edge now because it sounded honest, you looked away toward the sky instead.
The sunset had darkened into deep purples and navy blues, streaks of orange fading slowly behind the city skyline and the cold evening air nipped at your cheeks, and your hands instinctively shoved deeper into your pockets for warmth.
“By the way… did Mark tell you all this or something?” he asked eventually, stepping in front of you.
You frowned. “What does Mark have to do with this?”
Rex shrugged, gaze drifting upward toward the evening sky. “I dunno. You’re Mark’s friend, right? And he’s always had a thing for Eve.” He shoved his hands deeper into his pockets. “Plus I know he definitely doesn’t fuck with me.”
“Well, Eve told me herself,” you said eventually. “So it’s not like Mark filled my head with anti-Rex propaganda or anything.”
Rex snorted. “Anti-Rex propaganda sounds hilarious.”
“It probably exists somewhere.”
“Yeah, probably.”
Another silence settled between you, not awkward this time, just… quiet, then Rex spoke again, softer.
“I’m glad she found someone else.” You looked at him, in thought just observing him, his hair slightly getting tousled a little in the wind, his eyes still centered up in the sky as if he also had a lot on his mind maybe.
“Even if it’s Mark,” he added with a shrug. “He’s a good guy.”
Your brows lifted slightly. “You really think that?”
“Yeah.” Rex exhaled through his nose. “I mean, the dude’s awkward as hell, but he actually cares about people. A lot.”
You smiled faintly at that because yeah that sounded exactly like Mark.
“I hurt Eve,” Rex continued, gaze fixed ahead. “And honestly? Mark’ll probably treat her way better than I ever did.” there was no bitterness in his voice, just regret, the kind that sat heavy for a long time.
“I messed up,” he admitted quietly. “And I think about it more than people probably realize.”
For a second, neither of you spoke, the only sound came from leaves rustling overhead and the distant hum of passing cars, then you awkwardly gestured toward yourself.
“So… is this the part where I also trauma dump or something?”
Rex laughed suddenly, the tension easing away slowly. “Sorry,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “Didn’t mean to unload all that on you.”
“Nah, it’s fine.”
“No pressure though,” he added quickly. “You can totally tell me to fuck off.”
“I’m considering it maybe.”
“Damn.”
That earned another laugh from you and you tilted your head back slightly, staring up at the darkening sky.
“Um… honestly… my life’s way less dramatic than yours,” you admitted. “I’m just trying to survive school and figure out college applications.”
“Sounds horrifying.” Rex gave you a glance, and you nodded again chuckling slightly.
“It is horrifying.”
“What’re you applying for?”
You hesitated. “I dunno yet.”
Rex glanced at you. “Really?”
“Yeah.” You shrugged helplessly. “Everybody acts like you’re supposed to have your entire life figured out at eighteen, and I barely know what I’m doing tomorrow.”
“Mood.”
“And meanwhile everyone around me feels so…” you searched for the word, “…important.”
Rex frowned slightly.
“Like Mark’s out here saving the world, and Eve can literally rearrange matter. People our age are becoming like scientists and inventors and whatever.” You laughed weakly. “And I’m just trying not to fail calculus or… trying to graduate on time.” and before you could continue on, Rex stopped you.
“Hey,” Rex said immediately, “trust me-you do not want this life.”
You looked at him slightly unsure at where he’s going with this, but a bit curious on what he meant by that.
“I mean, sure, powers are cool sometimes,” he admitted. “But people only see the fun parts. They don’t see the getting-your-ribs-shattered part.”
Your expression dimmed slightly, because… he wasn’t exactly wrong and you never didn’t think about that sometimes really, the thought kinda hadn’t cross your mind not that because you didn’t know, but because you never really lived that part at all or not in a way you could on the daily, especially the trauma part, the constant fear, the watching your friends nearly die.
“And Mark?” Rex sighed. “Guy’s definitely not okay lately.”
You swallowed a little at that… because yeah, you knew, who wouldn’t know? everyone knew after the Chicago incident, you were just lucky you got out of the way, and weren’t even in that zone, but not everyone had that exact chance…
You still remembered visiting him in the hospital afterward, in a rush maybe before you entered into his room and saw the bruises covering half his body, the exhaustion in his eyes and the way he looked older somehow, like something inside him had permanently shifted.
“And just because you’re normal,” Rex said suddenly, pulling you from your thoughts, “doesn’t mean you’re not special.”
You blinked at him because he said it so casually, like it was obvious to him.
“I barely know you,” he continued with a shrug, “but you seem cool.”
You stared at him suspiciously. “This feels like a manipulation tactic.”
“It’s not!”
“You’re trying to win me over.”
“Maybe a little.”
You laughed under your breath.
“Well your strategy sucks.”
“Damn and here I thought I was charming.”
“You’re like… aggressively average at flirting.”
Rex looked genuinely offended. “Average?”
“Painfully.”
“That’s actually crazy.”
“It’s true.”
He squinted at you before pointing dramatically. “You know what? I think you’re meaner than me.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Nah, I’m seeing the vision now.”
You rolled your eyes, smiling despite yourself because maybe he really was trying and maybe underneath all the arrogance and bad decisions and nonstop sarcasm, Rex genuinely wanted to become someone better.
“I’m just trying to figure myself out lately,” Rex admitted after a quieter pause. “Trying to be less of an asshole. Meet people. Fix things where I can.”
You laughed softly. “Really? You saw some random girl aggressively staring at her phone in the middle of a park and thought, yeah, I should go talk to her?” and Rex looked at you before actually thinking about the response he would give to that, “well… if you put it like that way… i guess?”
You snorted again, this guy was… pretty weird, but maybe the good kind of weird, it wasn’t a bad weird but he was certainly kind of interesting somewhat… well what did you know? The Rex Splode who usually is boastful and rambunctious was probably an exterior and not who he actually was.
You studied him for a moment before speaking.
“Well… I think it’s working.”
Rex glanced over. “Yeah?”
“We’re talking right now, aren’t we?” and for once, Rex didn’t immediately joke, he just looked at you for a second before smiling faintly.
“…Yeah,” he said softly. “Guess we are.” the wind blew past again, cold enough to make you shiver slightly, Rex noticed immediately.
“You cold?” you paused, before answering. “...a little.”
Without another word, he shrugged off his hoodie and held it out toward you and… you stared at it.
Then at him.
“…Are you… trying to romance me right now?”
“What? No!”
“You literally handed me your hoodie during an emotionally vulnerable conversation.”
Rex paused.
“…Okay when you say it like that it sounds bad.”
You laughed so hard you nearly doubled over, and Rex groaned dramatically while shoving the hoodie against your arms anyway.
“Just take the damn hoodie before you freeze to death.” You reluctantly took the hoodie from his hands, you put it on as you adjusted the sleeves, you caught the faint scent lingering on the fabric, something clean and smoky with a hint of cedar underneath. Expensive enough to smell nice, but not overpowering. You didn’t know what cologne he used, and why was that a thought in your mind, you had no clue… The two of you continued walking side by side down the cobblestone path, your footsteps soft against the stone, the orange streaks were slowly fading, and the ombre sky was painted more in a deep navy color.
A cold breeze swept past again, but the hoodie helped definitely…
Rex glanced sideways at you, hands shoved back into his pockets.
“So,” he started casually, “I didn’t actually catch your name.”
You blinked at him, surprised.
“…Seriously?”
“What?”
“So like you knew I was Mark’s friend, but you don’t know my name?”
Rex grimaced slightly. “Okay, in my defense, Mark talks about people in the most unhelpful way possible.”
You snorted. “What does that even mean?”
“The dude would literally say stuff like, ‘Oh yeah, my friend said this thing,’ and then never elaborate.” Rex waved a hand dramatically. “You could’ve been anybody, for all I knew, you were some mysterious unnamed side character.” you let out an amused hum at that.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“I’m serious!” Rex insisted. “The guy’s terrible at introductions.”
“I don’t blame you, that’s so mark but still-”
“Hey, I recognized you, didn’t I?”
“Y’know maybe that’s arguably worse.”
Rex laughed under his breath, the sound quieter now compared to his earlier loud, exaggerated reactions, and you looked at him for a second before finally giving your name.
Rex repeated it back immediately, slower this time, like he was making sure he got the pronunciation right.
“Huh,” he said after a moment. “Fits you.” you narrowed your eyes. “And this is my turn to ask what does that mean?”
“I dunno.” He shrugged lazily. “Just does.”
“That’s not an explanation…”
“You ask too many questions.”
“And you give terrible answers.”
“Maybe that’s why this conversation’s fun.”
You rolled your eyes again, but there wasn’t much bite behind it anymore and for a while, the two of you simply walked, the park had gotten quieter as evening settled in fully. Most people had already gone home, leaving behind empty benches, rustling trees, and the distant glow of city lights beyond the park gates. Somewhere nearby, a fountain quietly trickled, the sound mixing with the soft hum of traffic far off in the distance.
And you liked the whole peaceful atmosphere, it really did feel calming and comforting of some sorts-
“You know,” Rex said suddenly, “you’re way less awkward than Mark.”
You let out an offended laugh. “That is an insane comparison.”
“I’m just sayin’.”
“No, because you are also awkward, so you can’t completely diss on him either.”
Rex gasped dramatically. “Me? Awkward? Never.”
“You literally tried flirting with me using hypothermia to give me a jacket five minutes ago.”
“That was NOT flirting.”
“You gave me your hoodie during an emotional conversation.”
“Okay, when you phrase it like that, yeah, maybe a little.”
You laughed again, and Rex grinned at the sound like he’d accomplished something, and for some reason whenever he smiled at you that way, a warm fluttering feeling bubbled in your chest, ever so fleetingly.
“So how long have you and Mark been friends?” he asked after a moment.
“Like maybe a year?” you replied. “We met in pre-calc.”
“Oof. My condolences.”
“You’re acting like he’s unbearable.”
“He kinda is sometimes,” Rex admitted. “Love the guy, but he has the energy of a wet paper towel.”
You nearly choked laughing, maybe you shouldn’t because Mark is one of your friends but how Rex described him was so funny, you just couldn’t help it.
“Dude… that’s so mean.”
“You know I’m right.”
“…Unfortunately maybe… yeah.”
Rex smirked triumphantly.
“But he’s a good person,” you added more quietly. “Even before all the Invincible stuff.”
The teasing expression on Rex’s face softened slightly.
“Yeah,” he agreed. “He really is.”
You glanced over at him. “You know you act like Mark is barely a guy you know, yet you still talk about him like you care.”
Rex looked almost surprised by the question.
Then he shrugged.
“I mean… yeah.” His voice lowered a little. “Mark’s a cool guy, and… y’know even if he isn’t in the guardians anymore, we would still have each other’s backs thats just the right thing to do.”
Something about the way he said it made your chest tighten slightly, not because it sounded sad exactly, just honest and genuine.
“You ever think about how weird your life is?” you blurted out suddenly.
Rex barked out a laugh. “Constantly, like who wouldn’t?”
“No seriously. Like… for you one minute you’re fighting aliens, next minute you’re walking around a park talking to some random person that you don’t know and literally go on a deep conversation, and now is walking with that person in the park.”
“Hey,” Rex pointed at you, “you’re not random anymore. I know your name now.”
“Oh wow. We’re basically best friends.”
“Exactly.”
You shook your head, smiling despite yourself, and a comfortable silence settled again before Rex suddenly looked over at you with narrowed eyes.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Did Mark seriously ditch you to go confess to Eve?”
You groaned instantly. “Yes.”
“Oh my god.” Rex looked genuinely delighted. “That’s hilarious.”
“It is not hilarious.”
“No, it absolutely is.” He laughed. “He left you stranded in a park because he was panicking over a girl.”
“I was freezing.”
“And now you’re wearing my hoodie.” Rex grinned smugly. “Honestly? I think I won here.”
“You are unbelievably annoying.”
“But am I wrong?”
You opened your mouth… then closed it again.
“…Unfortunately, no.”
“Exactly.”
Rex looked far too proud of himself over that tiny victory.
“You know,” he continued, “Mark’s probably freaking out right now.”
“He absolutely is.”
“He definitely rehearsed what he was gonna say beforehand.”
“Oh, one hundred percent.” you nodded a few times in agreement.
“And then forgot all of it the second he saw her.”
You both burst out laughing at the same time because honestly?
That sounded exactly like Mark Grayson.
And honestly… maybe the situation hadn’t turned out so bad after all.
Because if Mark hadn’t accidentally ditched you to go confess his feelings to Eve, then you never would’ve run into Rex. You never would’ve ended up here, walking side by side through a quiet park at night, talking like you’d known each other longer than just a couple hours.
It was strange, comfortable, somehow, the laughter between you both slowly died down into lingering chuckles and occasional snorts. Your stomach hurt slightly from laughing so hard, and you wiped quickly beneath your eyes where tears had gathered from wheezing too much.
Rex was still grinning beside you, shoulders shaking faintly as he tried to regain composure.
“God,” he muttered through another laugh, “I can literally picture his face too.”
“The panic?” you asked.
“The immediate regret after sending the text.”
You snorted again. “He definitely stared at his phone for like ten minutes afterward.”
“Absolutely.”
The two of you kept walking down the cobblestone pathway, your steps slower now without really realizing it. The park lights glowed warmly around you while the city beyond remained distant and blurred, headlights occasionally flashing through the trees. “So,” Rex said after a moment, glancing over at you, “you don’t have anywhere else you gotta be tonight?”
You shook your head lightly. “Nah. But I should probably head back soon.” You sighed dramatically. “If I stay out too late, my mom’s gonna start acting like I got kidnapped.”
Rex nodded immediately in understanding.
“Honestly? Fair.”
“She worries a lot.”
“At least you’re being responsible,” he said with a teasing whistle. “Very impressive for an eighteen-year-old.”
You rolled your eyes. “I guess.”
“Meanwhile Mark’s probably currently fighting for his life trying to ask Eve out.”
“That is* his version of fighting for his life.”
Rex laughed again before a quieter pause settled between you both.
Not awkward.
Just… softer now.
Then Rex glanced toward you again, expression shifting into something a little more hesitant.
“Well…” he started, rubbing the back of his neck slightly, “maybe we could exchange numbers?”
You immediately smirked.
“Oh, so we’re moving kinda fast now, huh?” you teased, turning toward him slightly. “Aren’t there steps to this? What’s next, a date?”
Rex looked at you for half a second before smirking right back.
“Well, hey,” he said casually, “I’m pretty patient.”
The confidence in his tone made warmth creep instantly into your face, and you looked away before he could notice the slight blush forming.
“Wow,” you muttered. “That was smooth. Do you rehearse these?”
“Nope. Natural talent.”
“Debatable.”
Rex clutched his chest dramatically like you’d wounded him.
“But seriously,” he continued, grin softening a little, “I just meant… y’know. We could talk sometime. Hang out. Do normal friend stuff.”
Something about hearing that from Rex of all people felt unexpectedly genuine, not flirtatious, not manipulative, just honest and honestly? it was kind of endearing.
You didn’t say much after that, all you did was simply pulled your phone from your pocket and handed it over.
Rex brightened immediately.
“Oh wow,” he said while typing his number in. “Look at that. Trust.”
“Don’t ruin it.”
“No promises.”
You laughed quietly and took his phone afterward, entering your contact into it before handing it back.
For a brief second, the two of you just stood there looking at each other beneath the dim park lights, the cold air brushed against your cheeks while distant city noise hummed softly in the background, then Rex spoke again, straightforward as ever.
“Also, I’m walking you home.”
You blinked. “You are?”
“Yeah.”
“That wasn’t a question.”
“Nope.”
You stared at him for a moment before shaking your head with a small smile.
“You know, you’re weirdly bossy for someone trying to improve as a person.”
“And yet,” Rex said smugly, shoving his hands into his pockets again, “you’re still letting me walk you home.”
You opened your mouth to argue, then closed it, because honestly? you didn’t really mind the company.
Rex went into more of a ramble, as you and him made a detour off the cobblestone pathway and eventually out of the park, and into the street going off the block to where your place was, all you knew now was that explosion boy was added onto your friend list.
Someone whom you didn’t expect to get to know of all people, and you already had one superpowered friend, so guess you just had another.
Well guess you’ll figure it out where it goes, because.. Maybe… Rex Splode wasn’t so bad after all.
