Whump Scenario #3

This one got away from me and started unfolding by itself...

“Please, just listen to me! You don’t have to do this!”

Whumpee cries out from the stone altar where he’s tied down, arms outstretched to either side and fastened to a pair of iron rings. He has only seconds before that knife, the one clutched in his friend’s hand, embeds itself in his chest.

“This is insane, don’t you get that? There has to be another way—”

“There isn’t.” His friend’s answer is monotone and lifeless. “I checked. I have to sacrifice the person that matters most to me, and that person is—you.” He advances toward the altar.

One last chance. Whumpee’s throat constricts with fear. The chains rattle as he struggles to sit up. His arms are pinioned too tight for that. He collapses back down.

“You don’t have to kill me! I’ll give you my blood anyway! Don’t do this—”

Too late. Whumper is already standing over him, blade suspended over whumpee’s chest.

“I have to.”

The faint whisper cuts nearly as deep as the knife does. Whumpee gasps for breath, blood quickly seeping through his clothes. Whumper presses his hands close to whumpee’s heart. He straightens up a moment later with stained fingers and stretches his arms wide. A cruel mockery of whumpee’s dying moments.

“I made the sacrifice!” he shouts. The echo throbs through the chamber. “Now give me what I want!”

Footsteps in the corridor. Shouts. But they’re too late. They can’t save him now.

“What have you done!” the girl screams. She rushes to whumpee’s side. The two others draw their weapons. But he can’t see any of them. His vision is fading.

“What I had to do.” Whumper sounds different now. His voice is cold, like it never had any life in it in the first place. “I know what [X] is planning. I can see through his eyes. And I can see where he is.”

Darkness envelops everything. Whumpee’s body has gone numb. But he feels something, right before he loses consciousness—a warm hand on his cheek.
