🧵For Refaat’s (@itranslate123) birthday, I want to honour him by sharing what I learned from him:

Even in face of the worst brutality, we still have a choice of how to resist: to set fires or to plant seeds. Both are form of resistance. But we still choose.

2. Refaat was a committed and dedicated teacher. His voice rings loud not only in his works but also the students he taught, with whom he shared essential tools for speaking telling their own stories, and helped build courage to speak the truth no matter what.

3. As a teacher, Refaat built capacity. Built cadres. Of storytellers, truth speakers and worldbuilder. He set minds on the path to liberation for years. And that means he built foundations for change. This is the essential work and calling of a teacher.

4. And above all, he never stopped building and sharing hope. Because resistance, liberation, truth telling are all built on hope. I mourn his loss. And I also remember this lesson most of all. Israel killed Refaat. But no empire, no matter how brutal, can kill hope!
