if you want a fun legally-blonde-esque movie that’s all about female empowerment and following your dreams and also learning to stand up to the ways that other people look at you and learning to appreciate your own intelligence, power, and strength, you should 100% look into watching Chalk It Up

it’s on netflix! (at least it is in the US!) the netflix summary is: hoping to impress her ex-boyfriend, chirpy college student apple sets out to form a gymnastics team and uncovers talents even she didn’t know she had.

but it’s so good and goes so far beyond the plot summary and it’s about the friendship between apple and her best friend (who wants to go into the CIA and who has been training to do it ever since she got to college), and the girls who she gets onto the gymnastics team (a motley crew of women who come from a variety of backgrounds, but who all just want to be great). it’s about title ix, and the way that we look at women and what we expect of them.

it’s about what it means to be a leader, but also about your own intelligence, and how you are so much more than what people want you to be

listen, this movie is campy and ridiculous and silly, but. it’s so good. i love it. it’s suddenly become one of my favorites. apple is so determined, and won’t back down. she’s driven! she knows what she wants! she’s determined to live the life that she wants to live, but she grows throughout the movie!
