Challenge 111: Menagerie: Tied Up

I have a rather large collection of ties, so “Menagerie” was the perfect opportunity to showcase some of their many colors and patterns. Also, when I worked retail the only part of our work attire that wasn’t mandated by management was the tie, so these were my way of taking something monotonous and serious and adding a little fun. This is probably one of the more detailed paintings I have done in acrylic ink, but it was super fun trying to recreate the fabric textures and getting all the shading on the folds and creases; I enjoy a good drapery study.

Challenge 111: Menagerie: Jane and the Birds Eye Stone

For this challenge, I imagined end papers for the middle grade story that’s taken up residence in my head, much like a barn owl. It’s a mystical tale full of lady pirates, odd collections, and this sought-after stone that I hope to write someday!

Challenge 111: Menagerie: Oddities

Since my boyfriend and I have been living together for the past two years, we’ve been able to compile our respective oddity collections. Most of the cool stuff is his (the coyote skull, bat specimens encased in glass, and petrified piranha), but I’ve added my own pieces as well (petrified dirt from Roussillon, France, dried roses, and a taxidermy mouse dressed as baphomet).

Some elements are a bit exaggerated for compositions sake. I do not technically have the dried roses framed, nor do I have a pinned moth (although I’d love one eventually). The embroidery is a take on a t-shirt we both recently purchased at a serial killer art show put on by Ryan Graveface (of Graveface records in Savannah.) In fact, a lot of this stuff has come from him.

I love being able to display objects that are a bit more uncommon, and I hope we can keep growing our collection! I’m glad I had an opportunity to showcase these fun oddities, and it was super fun working from live reference for a lot of this!

Challenge 111: Menagerie: A-Z Menagerie

For this challenge, I decided to make my most detailed repeat pattern yet. There’s 26 zoo animals, one for each letter of the alphabet! I think this would make a nice accent wall wallpaper in a child’s bedroom, at a library, or perhaps on the gift shop bags at a zoo. -Sayada

Challenge 111: Menagerie: Collections Over A Lifetime This challenge is after my own heart. I am and have always been a collector of many things (I prefer “collector” to “hoarder” because I always know everything I have and it’s always organized 😂 Distinct difference!) Definitely NEVER could be a minimalist. Some collections are undoubtedly better than others, though.  Caitlin
