Challenge 129: Community: “Hunting and Gathering” By Anna Gavalda I wanted to do a cover for the book "Hunting and Gathering" which was a big international seller several years back and was made into a movie in France. The story is a really great character study of four flawed people, who form an unlikely community of support for one another. The main character is Camille, who cleans for a living, barely eats and lives in the attic of the residential building where she works. She is an artist, but has floundered because her life has fallen to pieces. Philibert and Franck live in the beautiful, ornate apartment below her. Philibert is a shy and upperclass, and Franck is a bad-tempered chef. You discover that Franck's stress is from worry over his aging grandmother, Paulette, who means the world to him. On a freezing night, the two men rescue Camille, who has passed out in her attic, and the rest of the story is about the group of them forming a friendship, as Camille regains her strength and her purpose. They learn more about each other, and it's a story about empathy and community. So, for the cover, I wanted to have Camille, looking ragged, drawing in a fancy chair representing Philibert and Franck's apartment, showing the contrast between her life and theirs. I realized after I whipped up this composition though, that the community aspect isn't very obvious here unless you know the story, but hopefully some of our Square Carousel followers have read it!
