Brother's command.
This fan case, made from silk and linen, comes from Huize County (会泽县) in the Yunnan province. The art of embroidery was considered highly skilled work amongst the Miao peoples, who used it as a means to express and preserve their cultures. The symbol at the top is popularly used to represent longevity.
The Chinese characters depict a poem with the following translation:
An impromptu poem composed in spring by Chang Hao (1032-1085 a scholar of the Song Dynasty)
Pale clouds and gentle breeze near midday
Near the flowers, following the willows I pass before the stream
None of you know the joy in my heart
And say I squander time carefree like a child.
From the Royal Cornwall Museum.
