I know there's this prevailing opinion that anyone who complains about a computer layout changing is somehow a Luddite who needs to buck up and deal with it. But that's not what's going on at all. This isn't about technology; it's about having to accept changes that you do not want, in something that you personally use.
For example. Imagine someone came into your house and rearranged the furniture so that you're constantly tripping over chairs and you miss the couch when you go to sit down.
Imagine someone took a magic wand to your car's interior. Not only are the seat and the steering wheel at the wrong height, but the gear shift is in the wrong spot, and the turn signals are nowhere to be found.
If anyone advised you to "Just deal with it; that's how houses and cars are," that would be exceptionally strange and suspect.
And that's how it feels when my phone updates in the middle of the night, and suddenly everything about it looks wrong. I didn't want this, I didn't authorize this, and it feels extremely dystopian that I'm expected to simply live with this.
At least the corporations can't change the layout of cars they've already sold. Yet. They would if they could.
