"Change is a storm!" - James McInerney. Poet & Author of ‘Bloom’, ‘In between the lines’, ‘Red’, ‘The Pieces that Collide’ & ‘Everything I Write is About You’ OUT NOW on Amazon/Kindle.
My husband says he cares about me, cares for me and loves me and I’m his soul mate and I was made for him and he was made for me....yes, he actually says all that stuff. But what he doesn’t understand is...it’s all about perspective...because...THAT IS NOT THE WAY IT FEELS.
It doesn’t feel like he truly cares for me when he behaves the way he does. It doesn’t even feel like he cares about being a good person just for himself. Like being good doesn’t really matter to him. It’s not his priority. Doing the right thing ALL THE TIME is not high up on his to-do list. And that’s difficult for me, trying to live a life with someone I am unevenly yoked with. It’s so obvious.
I know in my soul, but there’s nothing, it seems, I can do about it atm. I’ve tried in so many ways to exit the premises only to find myself back at square one time and time again, still being dependent on him, still being stuck. Still being miserable and frustrated and alone, or at least feeling alone. I know I’m not really alone, but being married to him, being his wife, that’s the best way to describe it...lonely. I haven’t been happy in a long fucking time, actually.
My husband is more like a prison warden.
He distributes “controlled care”.
That kind of fake care that at first glance seems like true care but is really that “little bit of care” he gives at his convenience when it best suits his own needs -- like giving a baby a pacifier. It’s to make his life easier not mine, it’s to shut me up not make me happy, it’s to keep me dependent of him instead of helping me gain personal freedom of my own. He doesn’t love me enough to set me free or let me go, he loves me for himself, to keep me for himself, even if it makes me his unhappy, unwilling prisoner. That’s okay with him. But that’s not love.
Not truly.

Control.
Anger and hate Had controlled most of my life.
At one time I was innocent, Not a worry in sight.
Then life happened, So many different times.
Much less innocent And terribly cold.
Coping mechanisms, Later I was told.
Processing things day by day Yet there’s still some anger that hasn’t faded away.
On the surface I seem fine But underneath I’m still not.
For anger and hate Still have their shot.
There are entire movies TO DATE that have an all white cast, and we don’t bat an eye. Why is it so upsetting when these people of color, with a drive just like any other actor, take it upon themselves to make a movie with an all ethnic cast? Why does it bother you to let an entire community of people have their representation? We are still trying to erase entire communities from record. I have never, in my nineteen years, owned a doll that didn’t have skin as white as mine, and I never thought twice about it. I could go to any store and find a doll that looked just. like. me. A cis-gendered, bisexual, white female.
Growing up, I never realized what the world was like. I was warned about bad people, about dangerous situations, and men; but I still never feared for my life. I could pass an entire lifetime with my head in the clouds, and nothing would ever reach me. Because I passed the societal test. There are so so many people— men, women, children, and everything inbetween —who will never know what that feels like, and it disgusts me. I am heartbroken for the little kids who never got to have a doll that looked like them. I am heartbroken for the kids who didn’t grow up with a superhero that looked like them. I am heartbroken for the people who have lost those they love, and who have been the loved that were lost. I am so irrevocably angry, and confused with the reality before me. Racism is everywhere. Racism is real.
I am still learning. I am still so naive to the things that are happening around me. I am still trying to process.
I stand for human rights, unconditional, and irrevocable; we are far more than what the eye can see. We all deserve representation, love, acceptance, opportunities, etc.
I want there to be a day where every child can effortlessly find a doll that looks just like them. For every child to have what I have always had. I want race to be an afterthought. I want peace. I want justice. I want LIFE for people of color. Freedom.
Change is now.
amen, brotha.
That is the goal!
